Painful lump in pubic area - ouch!

Does anyone know what this could be? I’m panicking and obviously can’t see a doctor till I manage to get an appointment tomorrow and would appreciate it if anyone has any suggestions….

I’ve had pain at the left of my mons pubis when I walk, talk… generally do anything apart from sit or lie down for the past couple of weeks. I looked in the mirror and saw that the left side is swollen and I can feel a large lump which I can squish. It’s not in my groin but on my mons pubis to the left. It really hurts, especially at the end of the day. It’s not an ingrown hair as I have had plenty of those plus this lump is huge… the size of a large grape.

I’m pregnant so everything I Google it comes up with stuff to with pelvic girdle pain but I have an actual lump and I don’t feel the pain in my pelvis. It’s a sort of tugging pain. I thought maybe a hernia but when I googled hernia none of the places they seem to form are where my lump is.

Thanks. I will see a GP (if I can get an appointment…) but I’m so stressed I was hoping some people might have an idea?

Bartholin's cyst? They tend to go on their own after some time?

Bartholin’s cyst

I’ve had one of those before but (TMI) it was right at the entrance of my vagina. This is up higher if that makes sense. Can you get them there?

I seem to recall it's common to get all sorts of large spots when pregnant. I had a hideous one when in hospital which I managed to find whilst having a shower in labour... ug, just a pusy spot but large and sore.

Probably like a boil or abscess or something. Maybe an ingrown hair got carried away with itself. The fact it’s painful suggests it’s an infection.

I couldn’t get an appointment (my drs had no on the day appointments left by the time I got through on the phone) so I’ve had another day to stew in my own thoughts!!

Im now convinced it’s a hernia. It’s so painful by the end of the day! Pregnancy is such a beautiful thing…!

If it is a bartholin's cyst, I get almost instant relief by soaking a cotton ball in boiling water and putting it on the lump for as long as I can, provided it's not too close to inner labia. It starts getting better immediately for me. Not saying it is a bartholin but maybe an easy way of ruling it out and not worrying x

Thanks everyone. The nurse thinks its a hernia and I need to wait for an ultrasound referral to check. Just glad something is being sorted. Although… she said my local hospital have been rejecting ultrasound referrals recently so lord knows what I’ll do if that happens!

Bartolin's cysts are vulval, not on mons pubis. I hope that the ultrasound is reassuring.

Tanfastic · 25/10/2023 16:44

Won't be a Bartolin cyst as in the wrong location.

I get these a lot, mine isn't a hernia. I can get them anywhere in that area and they hurt and feel squishy just like you describe and then go down after a few days, until another pops up a few weeks later. I think mine are hormonal as I never used to get anything like this.

Lavender14 · 25/10/2023 16:48

Op it sounds like hideradentis superativa.

Is a condition affecting hair follicles causing painful cysts. Especially prevalent in the groin and armpits and under breasts. Its likely if you're very prone to ingrown hair because it's usually mistaken for that. It's hormone linked so while mine went away completely during pregnancy, it can flare it up for other people.

Best treatment is to go to the gp and ask them to confirm, but hot compress on the lump a few times a day should drain it. If not you'll need antibiotics. Tight clothes, certain materials and hair removal can trigger it as well.
