HELP....nasty thin wormy things

I went to wipe my face and just in time spotted this curled up, looking like a bit of 'bogey' (sorry) thing on my towel.

I felt physically sick when it uncurled itself...about an inch long. Thin...it was a worm.

Ummmm.....where did it come from? Me? the moisture from the bath?

I had spotted one a few months ago and thought it was a one off. Do I have an infestation?

apologies if you've just had breakfast. I need to know. thanks

mostly thread worms come from bottoms. Anyone in the house owning up to an itchy arse?

policywonk · 09/03/2008 09:38

Possibly threadworms - very common! Go to GP and get medication for whole family (called Ovex I think, but don't do what I did and buy it over-the-counter - if you have children get it prescribed for one of them so you get it free ).

You need to damp-dust everywhere, launder all towels and bedding on a hot wash, cut everyone's nails, wear pants in bed while medication takes effect, and enforce hand-washing after toileting for the kids.

Yep sounds like threadworms, whole family has to be treated. Same meds over counter or on prescription just depends how quickly you want to get treatment. Children under 1 have to go to GP.

As policywonk said your washing machine is going to be busy. Apparently sand pits are great for harbouring the eggs - hmmm nice.

thanks for swift response mb. pw and denny. It had crossed my mind but do they just come intermittently. I only saw one.

Mind you I am as blind as a bat, my stomach is turning over thinking I may have been touching them.

Yes....I see many trips to the laundrymat as I don't have a tumbledryer and I think its supposed to blowing a gale from tonight onwards.

How long does it last? We had a big sleepover about four months ago...could it have been then? Or do you think its been slowly infestating in my dh,me,dds over the last few months. Should I warn family members who have slept over?

thanks

I wouldn't worry about warning them. They could have given it to you!!!

We have had it a couple of times. One advantage was that DS gave up biting his nails; always a silver lining and all that.

Hygiene and serious clean needed. Tea tree oil and lavender are good natural antiseptics. If you use on skin make sure it's diluted.

Apparently one in four children have them. On the other hand, some new research out at the moment suggests that it's supposed to be good for the immune system. HTH

Thanks DettaJnr...Went on website for threadworm and now I'm not sure it was a threadworm after all. They are white tiny (you can barely see them) this was brown and much larger?!

Busy washing and washing again.

Brown is not threadworm, and an inch long is not threadworm. No idea what though - possibly larva from some sort of moth??!?

If you still have it, maybe take it to doctor or pharmacist for advice??

Sorry, not much help, but really doesn't sound like threadworm. They grow to a max length of 1.3cms and are white/transparent.
