Hip replacement- how much support is needed in first week?

My DP has been offered a cancellation slot for his hip replacement surgery, six months earlier than initially planned. This is great news!
however, he has the new date now on a Monday, and I am due to be going in a mini break in Europe with a friend on the Wednesday afternoon.
My DP says he’ll be fine by then but it seems really soon and I’m inclined to cancel the trip.
anyone have any experience of the level of support he will need?
we have a house, loos upstairs and down, no one else lives with us. Good neighbours.
thanks

What's superpath? I'm getting slight FOMO, supposedly I'm under one of the decent London private hip units and I haven't heard of it. Mind you, probably a bit late given I've had both surgeries now.

I had Superpath in late 2019 and I can't even see my tiny scar now. No muscles are cut, just moved aside. I was back at Pilates at 4 weeks post op.

How long is the wait on the NHS?

Twoshoesnewshoes · 25/10/2023 16:58

@Muddle2000 he was told a year, but it will have been seven months due to getting a cancellation.

I had a hip replacement at 62, home the following day. I live on my own and people kindly helped with the shopping and washing for the first couple of weeks, but I didn’t need any help with personal care or getting around the house - managed the stairs, kettle etc. Get all the disability aids offered.

I had a hip op in 19, I was kept in fir five days as I couldn't stand up without feeling faint. The physio had me walking up and down stairs before I came home. Agree with the grabber and loo seat, very helpful. I was completely back to normal after a couple of months. Very important to do the exercises. I'm having a knee replacement in a few weeks, the hospital is now discharging you the same day if you're om the morning list, stay in overnight if on the afternoon list. They are an NHS unit next to a general hospital, I had xray in May , saw consultant in August, op in November. My sister has had to wait over two years in Cornwall.

My friend recently had a hip replacement and had to have someone staying with her for the first week... she couldn't get in and out of bed without help. You definitely need to cancel

I have a 14” scar on each side! The upside is that when people ask about it, I can say, ‘Think that’s bad? You should’ve seen the shark when I’d finished with it!’ 😂

Cherryana · 25/10/2023 20:46

Superpath seems to be a much speedier recovery from what I have seen on the hip Facebook group I am on. He also won’t have the ‘no bending/90 degree’ rule - which I did for the first 12 weeks.

I think he will be able to do a lot but it’s still such a big operation no matter how you have it.

LINDAHOAD · 02/03/2024 10:22

as i have had both hips done - i feel he will need help for the first few weeks.

Have they told you about the clexane injections? That was a lovely surprise for me when hubby was discharged within 24 hours to my care, no district nurse and no help. We got through it but it wasn't easy on either part
It does take a while for the swelling to go down and for everything that was cut and reattached inside to go back to normal.
His was done last summer and it honestly has changed his and our lives for the better.
Good luck.
