Umbilical Hernia advice

Hoping someone can offer some advice on getting an umbilical hernia treated. DH has had one for a while and visited the docs a couple of times. It pops out multiple times a day, is painful and he finds it increasingly difficult to work as he has a physical job. But our GP refuse to refer him as they say an op will be refused unless he has been to A&E on multiple occasions. We were looking at paying privately but it will take all our savings (and then some) and quite honestly feel that this is exactly what the NHS should be there for! He was thinking of just going to A&E one day with the pain to see if this finds a different route for referral. It feels such a horrid waste of A&E's time as it isn't an emergency but feel stuck to know what else to do. Any advice welcome.

Bumping for you and following.
How is it going?

Strange reaction from GP. Has he had an ultrasound to confirm? If not, insist on one and state that hubby is taking OTC pain relief daily.

He needs to really lay it on thick. I too have an umbilical hernia and bending over etc is a nuisance. I did see a consultant but it took six months and he wasn’t keen to operate unless you are the right weight and BMI.

He relented eventually and put me on his list to be operated on. I first went to the GP in April 2022 and no sign of the op yet.

Hernias are definitely not seen as urgent in the eyes of the NHS.

Mine is 5cms in length and protrudes quite badly by the end of the day. They are basically not very interested.

Thanks Winky1973. Its such an obvious hernia that he doesn't need an ultrasound to confirm. TBF to the GP they just said they know his application for an operation will get refused from the experience they have with it. Sounds like even if you get on the op list its still going to be another two year minimum before you get to the top of the waiting list. Might be time to look at private options I think!

Yes, if it’s really troubling him then I think private is the answer. I received a quote from Spire Healthcare and I think it came in at just under £3k.

I can cope with mine as I have a sedentary job but your poor DH must struggle. They do get very uncomfortable so I can sympathise.

I hope he gets sorted. Best of luck!
