Glasses for the VERY short sighted!

Has anyone had any success recently finding frames suitable for a really high prescription? I need a small frame so I don’t end up looking like I’m wearing the ends of coke bottles! But the fashion at the moment is big frames.

If you are short sighted the thickest part of the lens is the outside edge so yes if you go for a smaller frame the thickest parts will be cut off, that said there are some really good high index lenses that significantly it down now thick and heavy the lens is
Zeiss go up to a 1,9 index lens which is very thin

Look at high index lenses with a smaller softer frame , there are still some out there

I’m -10 in both eyes with astigmatism and I don’t tend to go for tiny frames, I just make sure whatever I go for has quite a thick plastic frame so it hides the lenses at the sides and I get them
thinned as much as I can (last pair cost me £600).

Wolfiefan · 17/10/2023 17:56

Mine are more like -12 or -13. Even the maximum thinning isn’t enough if the frame is too big!

I too am -10 with astigmatism and I always get zeiss glass lenses . I choose a cheaper plastic frame and that counteracts the price of the lenses. My last pair were about £545. I get my specs from Boots.

DJSteves · 17/10/2023 18:06

-10 and -8 always have super thinned lenses and chunky frames. I'm on Vivienne Westwood ones at the moment 😁

Smartstuffed · 17/10/2023 18:48

If you have a narrow/small face/head maybe you could look at children's frames. My last three pairs have had frames from the children's sectio. I'm very short-sighted.

Whenasuitcasejustwontdo · 17/10/2023 18:59

I get the kids/teen frames too. Ray ban kids are good as they are thick plastic. I’ve only been able to find them in optical express in my area though.

Asda opticians: huge of choice of frames, truly thinned lenses and bargainous prices.

Purpleavocado · 17/10/2023 19:11

Mine are from Tesco and quite nice. The smaller the frame the better and you need plastic. Approx -12

RedSledgeEater · 17/10/2023 19:49

Plus one for Asda. They thin for free. I got two pairs for £80.

I've accepted that I look awful in glasses regardless. It isn't the lens thickness as such, as in coke bottle glasses. Instead, the light refraction from the lens makes me look odd underneath the lens (I.e. tiny eyes, face looks like it is going inwards). So I refuse to spend out on expensive glasses and wear contacts if I want to look nice.

To answer your question directly, I always buy the smallest frame.

-11.5 and -12.5 with astigmatism

Notweirdatall · 17/10/2023 19:51

My husband is extremely short sighted and has had good success with Ray ban frames. The proportions work well for him!

Wtafis · 17/10/2023 19:55

Let me know if you find any I’ve had the same 2 frames on rotation for 10 years

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 17/10/2023 19:58

I used to be -20 in both eyes. I just accepted that I would have a very limited choice of frames. For a long time I used contact lenses because of this.

When I got to the stage of needing reading glasses, I couldn't get a satisfactory lens/glasses combination so I though the time had come to try surgery. I had LASIK which was the best available at the time. It was not without problems but it has brought me down to a much more manageable -3.5.

These days, in your position I'd be looking for lens replacement surgery. If you live long enough you'll probably need it anyway, so why not have it now and get the benefit of corrected vision for the rest of your life as well?

Purpleavocado · 17/10/2023 20:07

I'd love lens replacement surgery but last time I checked it was over £3k per eye

uggmum · 17/10/2023 20:09

I bought so some recently from Ollie Quinn. The frames are lovely. The nicest I found.

I went for the thinnest lenses. They are thicker at the edges but the frames hide it well.

They also do slot-over sunglasses for most of their frames.

Wolfiefan · 17/10/2023 22:25

Thanks for all the suggestions. Surgery or contact lenses not an option.
