What would you use for a drool rash around an 8mo's mouth?

DD has a red flaky rash around her mouth from drooling - she is susceptible to ezcema so I don't want it to cause a flare up.

What would you use - Aveeno? Epaderm? Acqueous? Vaseline?

What is the least toxic - she has a lizard tongue which is constantly licking below her bottom lip (probably because it is dry and itchy)

Help!

not a lot you can do with that IME, but Vaeline would be the best - even if you just out it on at night so they don't lick it off. At least it will give it the chance to heal a bit for she gets all dribbly again in the morning!

itsahardknocklife · 08/03/2008 11:20

yes I would say Vaseline too.

LifeIsHell · 08/03/2008 11:21

I would use olive oil, too. But it can stain clothes.

I agree that whatever you use should be put on when she's asleep. Also, I know it's boring, but maybe dabbing her mouth (not rubbing) quite frequently when she's awake to keep the wetness to a minimum.

thanks everyone

I am a constant dabber! But sheis at nursery 3 days a week and it flares up there (not so much dabbing!)

what do you use to dab it?

meep · 08/03/2008 11:36

a muslin normally - or a tissue

I would stick to a muslin - nice and soft.

CorrieDale · 08/03/2008 11:47

After weeks of research, using all kind of expensive organic products, I discovered you can't beat the humble vaseline. And muslins.

I use Neutrogena unscented hand cream (the type that comes out like gel and turns into cream as you rub it). It gets rid of the rash and stops chapping.

meep, go to boots and get a tube of diprobase OINTMENT (not cream). It is the texture of vaseline, a very good barrier cream, but a bit kinder to ezcema/sensitive skin.

this is what we were told to use by a paed. dermatologist at gt ormond street and it has never caused any problems for my horribly ezcema-y children. hth

PrincessPeaHead · 08/03/2008 14:13

oh and we were told to put it on before every feed, before going out in the cold and during very drooly periods (like teething).

basically put a bit on in the morning and keep it topped up before meals etc

meep · 08/03/2008 20:35

PrincessPea - I actually have some Diprobase ointment inthe cupboard (one of the many things I have tried for my own ezcema!). I will give it a go - thanks

I found Lansinoh worked really well.

PrincessPeaHead · 09/03/2008 16:30

oh good! let me know how you get on with it.
