Eye pressure is 22 in one eye - any opticians around?

So I have just been to the eye hospital walk in A and E as my GP sent me because I’ve had a sinus infection but my eye hurt when I move it side to sides. They did a check and my left eye which is fine was 14 and my right eye which was same side as the infection and the eye giving me grief was 22. This was one over being high.

they have sent me away with dry eye products.. is this something I now have to monitor? Nothing was mentioned…

Just have regular (two year/one year) optician appointments. They’ll measure the pressure as part of the eye test.

22 is not high in the grand scheme of things. Probably just the infection.

Hi Optometrist here.
Having a difference between the two eyes of that amount is not usual.
Have you had anything surgical done to either eye? Cataract extraction/laser eye surgery etc

Are you getting any halos around lights in that eye at all.
I'd book in for an eye examination asap. There are a few things which can make eye pressure high (or occasionally make the other eye lower). It could just be that there was a problem with the equipment, it may be that something was missed, or not severe enough to be obvious.

Anyway I'd book for tomorrow if you can get one.

@underneaththeash not sure if you're still in here, can I ask your opinion please, eye pressure of 43 then when rested with the consultant 32, in left eye, have had steroid drops in that eye for last 3.5 weeks, do I need to be concerned about sight loss?

underneaththeash · 13/12/2023 23:20

@MissSmiley do you mean steroid drops or anti glaucoma meds?

MissSmiley · 13/12/2023 23:22

I've been having steroid drops (for scleritis) for the last three and a half weeks (maxidex) now prescribed timolol twice a day for the next two weeks on top

underneaththeash · 14/12/2023 09:50

Steroids can sometimes cause eye pressure to increase (which is why they measured it), the timolol should bring it down.

The relationship between high eye pressure and sign loss is really complicated and not fully understood. Sight loss in glaucoma is due to a loss of retinal ganglion cells transmit visual information to the brain. Some people have more of these than other people, some people have glaucoma and also have normal eye pressure, some people have high eye pressure and no visual loss.

So, the answer is - I don't know! They'll probably do a visual field test on you at some point - which will tell you. If they don't, you can get one done at your opticians.

Hope the scleritis resolves soon too.

@underneaththeash thanks for replying. I appreciate it, I feel I haven't had much support at the hospital, obviously I know scleritis is an urgent treatment thing but they haven't given me much information other than that. I was aware that increased eye pressure could be a side effect but thought it would take longer than 3.5 weeks to happen, also this is the third time I've had scleritis and it hasn't happened before.

I admit I'm probably overreacting a bit, just don't know what's causing the scleritis (it's not RA) and now another thing to think about.
