i really don't want any more children in the near future, probably at all. using condoms at the moment but aware that at some point they will prob split/fail and i'm not comfortable with taking the MAP.
wary of hormonal contraceptives because of history of breast cancer in the family and also becuase of weight gain, not keen on coil because they don't actually prevent fertilisation of the egg iyswim. am a bit stumped! any ideas? what works for you?

Diaphragm? Non Hormonal Coil? Patch? Progesterone Only Pill? Combined Pill? Implant? Withdrawl Method? Depoprovera? Hormal Coil? Condoms? Take your pick. I prefer the Non Hormonal Coil myself. There are several version of the NHC my version is NovaT380, there is a smaller coil called the Flexi T300.

I was under the impression that the NHC has a copper band near the top, the copper coil makes the linning thicker therefor stopping implantation. But, maybe I am wrong. Why don't you ask your doctor/nurse.

amytheearwaxbanisher · 08/03/2008 00:41

do not and i cant stress that enough get an implanon i had constant bleeding, and the hormones of a mentallist when i had it in

amytheearwaxbanisher · 08/03/2008 00:42

could your dh/dp get the snip?

thestands · 08/03/2008 00:46

There is also a brand new coil just out which last for ten years, I'll just look up what it is called. Ok it's called T-Safe 380A QuickLoad and if you are over forty when it is fitted you can use it until after menopause.

beautifuldays · 08/03/2008 10:18

i don't really want a coil, because i want a contraceptive that stops the sperm and egg meeting, rather than stopping a fertilised egg implanting, iyswim. a part of me thinks that once the sperm and egg have fused, that is a potential life, so not really comfortable with a coil...

oh also i'm brestfeeding and have had PND in the past so hormones not good.

maybe dh could get the snip. he's only 29 tho!

Q: What's the best form of contraception a woman can use?

A: A vacestomised man.

Seriously, this is the only and best way to go if you both agree that your family is complete.

So why do so relatively few couples seem to use it I wonder?

It's a total no brainer as far as I'm concerned.

Is is because men are just a load of pathetic jessies who use the excuse that they're worried it will make them feel emasculated?

ChasingSquirrels · 08/03/2008 22:56

we use condoms, I decided when I came off the pill (we went abroard for a couple of years, and I could have brought it buy OTT so would have been self-prescribing which I didn't want to do) that I was never using hormonal contraception again.
So it has been condoms for over 10 years now, 10mo of that ttc, 2 x 9mo pg, no splits etc.
If dh suggested the snip I would agree, although if he agreed to another child (he won't) or I accidentally got pg I would be over the moon.
But overall I am v happy with condoms (and he doesn't complain), plus we don't have to argue about who sleeps on a wet patch!

beautifuldays · 09/03/2008 09:24

i am perfectly happy using condoms at the moment - like you say, no wet patch!- but falling pregnant would be pretty disastrous at the moment. i really don't want another baby right now.

however i'm 25 and very aware that i may change my mind about that in 10 yrs time...
