i don't know when was the last time you had it filled?

louismummy · 07/03/2008 21:09

might be able to have an apiceptomy. (operation to look at the root in your jaw.) but probably there is a bad perforation.(hole in side of tooth)
if your keen on saving it you might need to see a specialist ( endodotist) or save the cost and go straight for an implant. ( prob not that much differace in cost specialist re- root canal work and then a new crown.)

I had an abcess under a new crown (a few years ago). I had a hard bump coming out of my gum. My dentist said he could remove the tooth or (if I was willing to pay for it, because he didn't feel he was sufficiently skilled) he could recommend a private specialist to me.

I decided to fork out for the private guy. He tried to fix it once and my whole head swelled up as the infection was still there. He did it again for free and this time managed to fix it and I haven't had any problems since. It cost about £450 at the time. I am a bit dentist phobic too. I just don't trust them.

I would say it is not impossible that the problem could be fixed but you do need to find a specialist and may have to pay for it. Is the tooth in a place that would show when you smile?

Is it the same dentist you have seen throughout all this root canal work? Have they said anything about why it is not working or given an opinion on what you should do next?

KatyMac · 07/03/2008 21:20

First one was 14 yrs ago

Dentist has been very supportive - completely re-did crown without charge after re doing the root canal

He think I have to lose it now & I am very stressed about it

If you could afford it, I would ask your dentist whether he thinks it would be worth going private, whether he knows anyone who might be able to fix it? If he doesn't think so, then, from what louismummy has said, an implant would be the way to go because you would want to replace a front tooth with something. Has your dentist said anything about implants or what does he suggest?

I know what it is like to worry about your teeth. I have always had problems and sometimes have nightmares about my teeth falling out or shattering. I have to make a decision soon about having all my veneers redone (first done when I was 16 due to Tetracycline-staining on my teeth). I keep putting it off but one of my front teeth has decayed so I will have to have at least one redone.

Commiserations.

I have to say - this all sound horrific tbh

OK after careful prodding (whilst heavily drugged up) I think the abscess is actually on either the next tooth or the one after

Which has to be good news doesn't it?
