Temp of 40.2, dd2 (2 years) should i worry?

Marne · 07/03/2008 16:54

I took her to the gp yesterday as temp was 39 and she had a rash, gp told me it was a virus, once we got home she seemed better, this morning temp was 39 again, after a while it went down.

Just took it again after a trip out to get dd1 and its 40.2.

Should i phone the GP?

Why is it going up and down?

I would be a bit worried tbh. What have you done to bring it down? (ime Nurofen for children works best)

Twiglett · 07/03/2008 16:58

have you stripped her down and given her nurofen

is it going down with meds?

children's temps spike .. but I would be worried at 40.2

needahand · 07/03/2008 17:00

DD had that recently, I took her to A&E (especially as she had not other sypmptoms and I couldn't understand how/why she could have temperature like that). No one there thought I was overreacting and she was seen relatively quickly as A&E did seem to think that yes she was a priority. If your GP is still open, I would call him. Otherwise would call out of hours GP, otherwise would go to A&E. Better safe than sorry

Marne · 07/03/2008 17:03

She had nurofen this morning and i have just given her some more, she's still eating and drinking but not herself.

She is shivering and has goose bumps, should i still strip her down?

Strip her down, lukewarm water flannels on her face/body + call that GP

FloraPosteschild · 07/03/2008 17:06

Give her a warm bath - slightly erring toward hot - it will trick the body into cooling itself down. Cool bath will make body try to warm itself, not a good idea.

Nurofen and calpol.

It is spiking because t's a virus - they multiply twice a day.

Bacterial is more constant.

soremummy · 07/03/2008 17:07

Keep checking temp after you have stripped her down/sponged her down if its still high i would take her or ring gp

FloraPosteschild · 07/03/2008 17:08

Btw it often goes up around teatime.

You need to get it down because of the risk of febrile convulsions.

What kind of rash? Ds2 had measles the other week.

ScoobyDYSONDoo · 07/03/2008 17:08

Be very careful is well because high temps in that age can cause convulsions so keep an eye at all times.

I would still strip her down even use a cold flannel all over her body.

soapbox · 07/03/2008 17:09

If she has a temp then you really need to keep on top of the medication to keep it under control. I'd do calpol and neurofen alternatively every 2-3 hours. So dose of calpol now, dose of neurofen at 7ish, dose of calpol 10ish and so on.

Take the temperature again 1/2 hour after each dose is given to check it is still under 40degrees. If it isn't being contolled by medication then I think you need to go to out of hours doctor/A&E.

needahand · 07/03/2008 17:09

Didn't want to worry you but now that Flora has said it: there is a risk of convulsions that is why I would seek medical help. My very own personal limit is 39.8 C anything above that and I get DD checked

FloraPosteschild · 07/03/2008 17:10

NO sorry Scoob, not cold, use nice and warm flannel. NOT cold because of what I just explained. Honestly, they changed the advice, NHS will tell you the same - if you do cool water the body will try to compensate.

FloraPosteschild · 07/03/2008 17:11

Plus they hate cold flannels

Marne · 07/03/2008 17:13

Ok, i have stripped her down, she has had nurofen and a drink. Waiting for dh to get home, doctors is half an hour away and shuts at 5pm. If she's the same when dh gets home i will take her to A&E or out of hours doc.

ScoobyDYSONDoo · 07/03/2008 17:13

Hmm just shows what different advice is around, when my sister dc was poorly with a very high temp she was told to strip & put a cold flannel all over the body!

anyways ds has had the cunvulsions & they are not nice so you must keep on top of the medication & i would do what soapbox suggested.

needahand · 07/03/2008 17:16

I have also heard you need to use lukewarm/warmish flannels and not cold.

Marne I hope she gets better soon

lucyellensmum · 07/03/2008 17:18

if she has a temp of 40.2 after nurofen i would be worried enough to be calling the doctor. You can give paracetemol at the same time too. The reason she is shivering is bcause of the temperature, she probably FEELS cold. I would go with the bath advice, but get on the phone to the out of hours NOW as ours keeps us waiting for ages. Dont be fobbed off either, i really think she needs to be seen.

What are you taking the temp with>?

FloraPosteschild · 07/03/2008 17:20

I know Scooby, they only changed it a few months back, just to confuse everyone. They used to tell me to use cool water as well, I was so glad when they changed it as Ds used to shreik, I couldn't bear it!

It was LEM on here who told me about it.

Marne - hopefully the Nurofen will kick in soon and she'll get some rest.

I think any temp that goes on for a few days wants investigating really.

Ds's was about 3/4 days of around 39, and then he got a rash and it came down.

Wishing her well xx

FloraPosteschild · 07/03/2008 17:20

X posts LEM!

Marne · 07/03/2008 19:23

Thankyou all for your advice. I managed to get her to a doctor as her temp got higher after stripping her down

The doctor has given her antibiotics for an ear and throat infection. Her temp is now 39 (still high) and she is now asleep.Hopefully she will feel better in the morning.

OP posts:
lucyellensmum · 07/03/2008 19:35

Bless her heart - Sleep is the best thing for her Do keep up with the nurofen and calpol together, dont wait for a temp spike just give them as soon as you can, dont wake her though unless you are worried. Lots and lots of fluids, and icecrem for that throat. Its so shit when they are poorly isn't it. Don't hesitate to get her seen again though if that temperature spikes again. My doctor said to me there is no such thing as an over anxious parent and they would rather see someone ten times in one week than miss something. Try and get some sleep yourselves too

Hope she feels better soon

nobodysfool · 07/03/2008 19:35

My ds has conulsions with a high temp.
We were told by the hospital never to use cold water as the body will compensate by holding on to the bodys heat and cause the temp to rise even more.
Strip them off.
Always use tepid water to mop their body and face.
Put a fan on in the room but never directed at the child or open a window as long as no breeze will blow on child.
Use both paracetamol and ibprofen.
If in doubt go to A & E.Better to be safe than sorry.
Hope your dd feels better soon x

nobodysfool · 07/03/2008 19:36

Sorry forgot to say....give her drinks that are as cold as possible to cool her core temp down.

FloraPosteschild · 08/03/2008 06:39

I'm really glad she's been seen and hope the AB's kick in swiftly. They usually make such a difference ime xx
