Strange nerve sensations

Jess38 · 12/10/2023 14:25

Hi

I am posting here to see if these symptoms sounds like low Vit D, low ferritin and low HB, all of which I have been diagnosed with after recent blood tests. I went to the GP with these symptoms and they now seem to think it's because of my deficiencies. Can these 3 deficiencies really cause:

Electric zap sensations, mainly in arms and hands
Tingling hands and feet
Hot feet at night
Buzzing sensations in legs
Weak legs, sometimes I feel its more my left one but sometimes it feels even
Fatigue

The electric zaps scare me and made me think it's MS but the GP doesn't think so. Now waiting for folate and b12 results to come back.

I wanted to mention that these symptoms come and go, some days I don't experience all of them

Would love to hear if these weird nerve issues can be causes by my deficiencies...

I'm 40, not on any medication and relatively healthy

I had similar a few years.
I thought I had MS.
Saw a neurologist. It was Benign Fasciculation Syndrome.
Stress makes it worse. So worrying about MND or MS will not be helping.

I know but it’s so hard not to worry isn’t it? You keep thinking what the hell is this!

Lswilliams · 25/07/2024 08:25

@Crikeyalmighty my blood results came back with very low ferritin 19. I'm still breastfeeding and have heavy periods so it's no where near where it should be.
As it was borderline the NHS app didn't think to flag it. Luckily I checked it well. I think I was low in b12 too. All happened weeks after having COVID which gave me a chest infection. I know it'll be a slow recovery but I do feel like with supplements I will get better now. Thank you for sharing your story. Honestly thought I was going crazy.
I've joined the iron protocol group on Facebook and it's given me so much information that has helped if anyone else reads this.

Crikeyalmighty · 25/07/2024 08:42

@Lswilliams yep- it's very frightening- the first time I was sat in a cafe in Berlin and I suddenly got buzzing in a finger- like someone had switched a battery one and then pins and needles in my feet and a buzzing sensation round my mouth and a very light headed sensation - I was 60 at the time- I was convinced it was a mini stroke, sat there raising my arms up and down , checking my smile in a mirror- I must have looked a total nutter - in my case I had covid 2 weeks before and stupid me went and had my 3rd vaccine a week later and therefore in my case I think my system freaked out- I had a couple of deficiencies too but nothing major -the good thing though was the blood tests picked up I was pre diabetic, and my cholesterol was way too high

VeronicaBeccabunga · 25/07/2024 09:20

I'm pleased to have found this thread as I have been having strange burning/pins and needles in my hands and feet and sometimes on my face for a couple of months. Assumed I had something awful and serious or was going mad.....
I had been feeling quite ill and although I tested negative for Covid I may have tested too late.
My doctors have been very thorough and tested for all sorts, with blood urine and stool samples all coming back as 'satisfactory'.
I'm taking vitamins and extra B12. I've just been offered statins for very slightly raised cholesterol [which can cause these symptoms, along with diabetes] but I haven't decided whether to take them or not.
Apparently there is a thing known as 'socks and gloves' syndrome: I actually described the feeling as being like wearing too tight itchy woolly socks. It's not dangerous and I'm told it should wear off in time but to get back to the medics if there are sudden changes or if I have any sort of muscle weakness.

So pleased to have found this thread. . I too have convinced myself it’s something awful but I have tingling all over my body. Head, face, arms and legs. Feels constant until I forget about it.

I had an awful dose of Covid 3 weeks ago. Assume Covid could have just been the flu I guess but just an awful virus. One night I woke up sweating and hallucinating so must have affected my nervous system.

am hoping it is post viral and will just go. Waiting for a gp appointment now.

BethButBetter · 06/05/2025 21:17

Hi, I’m reading your post with interest @Lswilliams as I’m going through the exact same thing. Post virus, 6 weeks on, strange neuro episodes pins and needles, tremors, pressure in head and sinuses, dizziness at night, headaches, nerves seem shot. Stress makes the symptoms worse but I haven’t yet found how I can keep them at bay. Only thing they can find is deficient in ferritin (25) and Vit D, but I am being referred for MRI. Did you get better in the end? And did you stop breastfeeding? My doc has suggested it do (mines two years old) but it’s so difficult with being so exhausted already. I’m feeling very low - 2 young kids, signed off work for a short while as I kept breaking down.

Crikeyalmighty · 06/05/2025 22:07

@BethButBetter I had this come on out the blue in September 2022 , literally a few days after I had what I realise now was Covid but didn’t test. Started with a weird buzzing on my top lip and I felt all heady - was petrified it was a stroke as I was 60 at the time, followed through a few days later with frequent pins and needles in feet and a feeling intermittently like I had a battery in my right leg, then a buzzing in one finger , lots of lightheadedness, back of head headaches- one side of body felt slightly weaker, all totally awful- had loads of bloods, saw a neurologist privately - was convinced I had MS/MND/brain tumour etc -
only thing they found was vit D a bit low, ferretin a bit high , pre diabetes ( just) and raised cholesterol - my BP though was through the roof - think that was anxiety

Was put on statins, beta blockers low dose for the headaches and anxiety

gradually it all improved. I did lots of stretching, wim hoff breathing, went gluten free ( neurologist suggested this) and it took 8 months but one day I realised I felt normal again . The neurologist said she had seen quite a few similar cases where covid and other viruses had literally sent their nervous system into a meltdown and it kind of needed time , very good habits and only time would really sort it . Obviously anyone needs to get checked out but so many people have had post viral syndrome as they call it - for some it affects heart and breathing, others like me it seems to attack the nervous system

BethButBetter · 07/05/2025 09:23

@Crikeyalmighty thanks for sharing your experience, it’s quite scary going through it myself and talking about it really helps. Did you find your symptoms fluctuated? Some odd days I can be absolutely fine (1 in 4 maybe), then other days I wake ok but tremors and pressure starts. Other days like today I wake up feeling so fatigued and my right eye is blurry and feels so weak. I just don’t know how I’m going to get through this with two young children and a job to hold down. I find myself breaking down crying. Strangely sometimes crying helps as things settle afterwards?! Not always though.

I’ll look at Wim Hof breathing, thank you so much. I’m also off to see an osteopath today whether that’ll help or not.

did you get prescribed medication? I’ve gone from nothing to iron, vitamin d, antibiotics and Amitriptaline. The concoction has given me IBS symptoms (I think, or it could just be my nervous system).

Crikeyalmighty · 07/05/2025 10:36

@BethButBetter yes totally fluctuating - I had very sore eyes too as part of it - like I had shampoo in them . Some days it would be one thing ( like the pins and needles only) other days it would be multiple things. If I can just say I hadn’t seen a doctor for 21 years apart from a smear test, so these were very definitely real issues and not in my head. Stuff that helped me - gluten free ( in the main) - lots of water, vit D and vit B spray in the mouth, magnesium spray for feet and lower legs ( it burns a bit) - that helped a lot - the breathing, lots of stretching , particularly head and neck stuff, daily multi vit plus omega 3. And a trick if I felt heady was to stare into the distance , fix on a spot for 30 seconds, don’t blink and hold it ( neurologist told me that one) - do though get checked out and a full set of bloods/blood pressure etc as yes MS can present in similar ways and needs ruling out - although these days it’s got far better treatment wise- I have 2 younger friends with it - both initially had big eye issues but nothing much else and both are fit and well -

to me though it was so familiar when I read your post and the neuro told me that she had seen a fair bit of it - much more in women by the way

Crikeyalmighty · 07/05/2025 10:39

Your MRI by the way will pick up anything like MS. It’s very easy isn’t it for people to say don’t feel stress as it makes it worse. Of course you feel stressed - I thought I would explode from the anxiety

Pinkrabbitt · 07/05/2025 10:45

I've had very similar symptoms for the past few years as well. Been totally checked out and nothing medically wrong.

Have a looked at painfreeyou.com it has helped me a lot. Basically it's where you get strange symptoms or pain and there's no medical reason. Caused by the brain perceiving danger (like anxiety and stress). Lots of people with weird symptoms have got better. He has a book on Amazon as well - Dan Buglio Pain Free You. It's not just about pain but all sorts of symptoms, including neurological ones.

I get internal tremor, pins and needles in feet and hands, a feeling of hot water running down my legs and things like that.

BethButBetter · 07/05/2025 16:00

Wow, who even knew all of these things existed before getting ill. This afternoon I’ve been hit by crippling fatigue and have lost all appetite. Is this the same as you both? Ive no idea how I will work with this but everyone has just told me to rest (for now at least). Thank you so much for your responses.

Crikeyalmighty · 07/05/2025 16:47

@BethButBetter I did lose my appetite but think that was anxiety -

BethButBetter · 08/06/2025 08:34

Hi @Crikeyalmighty i hope you don’t mind but I’ve just sent you a direct message for some advice. Appreciate if you’ve moved on and would rather not reply, but have you received it?
