Pre diabetes

Had a letter from GP last week telling me I’m pre diabetic (amazed they tell you just by letter). Needless to say I’m sorting out my diet drastically. I’m very overweight and need to lose some weight to hopefully give me some energy and get me moving more too.

For anyone with diabetes - the weeing at night thing - is it falling asleep and keep waking up for the loo? Or needing the loo multiple times before you can fall asleep? I have the latter and it can be 8 times on occasion, it feels like my body is galloping to get rid of every drop before it will let me sleep.

I've been T2 diabetic for around 14 years and I usually wake 2 to 3 times during the night to pee, but that's very normal for me... I don't get any issues before I go to bed.

It's good they've found this out before you're lurching into full diabetes - and it's not just sugar you need to watch (that's a bit of a myth) but your body will turn carbohydrates straight to sugar too. I have lost the most weight and had best success with my blood sugars by following a lower carb lifestyle (not low carb as that's too extreme for me). Even losing 7lbs will help you, so don't feel tempted to go to levels with a diet that you can't sustain long term. Slow and steady wins the race.

@SkyFullofStars1975 thank you, that’s reassuring to hear. My laziness and self-indulgence have caught up with me, sadly.

im 56 and the weight is clinging very stubbornly, prob lost a pound in a week 😞

I'm 53 and understand completely! I've now had to accept that I'm very carb sensitive and it's been a whole new way of eating to learn but it's slowly become habit.

@DontLeanOnTheKeyboard I see this was nearly two months ago, how are you finding things now?

I'm in a similar situation though I think my tests have shown worse results. As well as bad eating habits, I had a period of a few years when I hardly walked at all, though I already started trying to do a bit more walking again before my very recent diagnosis. I'm hoping to lose weight through more exercise, but even if it doesn't change my weight or change the fact that I've got type 2 diabetes, I believe it will have a positive impact on my health more generally. I don't actually know the number from my results but have been told it's too high, but at this point I don't need medication/insulin, it's about trying to get it under control through lifestyle.

This started with a general check up appointment with a nurse and I've gone back to see the same person 3 times, and while I still feel anxious about the diagnosis, I'm finding the continuity helpful and I don't want to have to wait several weeks for shorter appointment with a GP and never seeing the same one twice (the practice nurses are clearly working with the GPs and checking details with them).
