lymphangitis (blood poisoning) - anyone?

We're steadily working our way through obscure ailments this week - having just spent a couple of days on the children's ward with dd2 (who can't walk due to joint inflammation caused by flu) this morning I got to do my daily hospital trip with dd1 instead, who had a spot on her finger which overnight developed into a whopping abscess with a very textbook red line going up her arm, and swollen lymph nodes on that side. Her finger is purple and swollen to twice its normal size.
She's been prescribed oral flucloxacillin and needs to go back to the A&E follow-up clinic tomorrow, she's fine in herself and back at school now.

Can you please reassure me that this will go away with the antibiotics? And that ds isn't going to break a leg / develop an ailment requiring urgent attention at the weekend, thus ensuring all of my children get to attend hospital this week?

Can't believe it's nearly the Easter hols. There's always been at least one child with something wrong here since half term.

Flucloxacillin is normally prescribed for skin infections so it should work. As for the rest of it, can't promise anything.

dd1'll be fine, antibiotics are top for soft tissue infections and you caught it early.

No guarantees on ds though...

Ooh golly that sounds horrid

I have never seen it in real life, always thought the red line description sounded odd but it looks like it really does happen!

I am so sorry you are having such a tough week. Is Dd2's foot any better now?

geekgirl · 07/03/2008 11:26

it looks just like this really

(althought minus the manly hand and hair on arms, as dd is an 8 year old female ) , until this morning it was the stuff of childhood legends about how you die when the line reaches the heart etc. for me, too

dd2 is still not walking much, but at least we know it will go away eventually.

God, that is truly terrifying

I'm really glad she's on the mend now. Is it true that if it reaches your heart you've had it?

MrsBadger · 07/03/2008 11:46

no

but the further it gets the harder it is to treat - advanced cases would need IV antibs

FloraPosteschild · 07/03/2008 11:47

Blimey.

oh, I doubt it, it's nothing to do with your blood anyway, it's the lymphatic system. But I guess once it has spread that far you have a pretty bad infection.

I also used to think that you'd bleed to death almost instantly if you scratched your wrists

The world used to be full of dangers!
