B12 deficiency

shapovalov · 09/10/2023 17:27

I haven't been diagnosed but I am wondering if this sounds like I have a vitamin b12 deficiency. I've ordered vitamins today. I'm 30 and a female.

I had disordered eating for a long time (approx.10-15 years)- the past year I have been eating a lot better but still not 100%. I know my diet in the past was extremely disorder due to emetophobia and basically being afraid to need the toilet at work.

My symptoms are:
Extremely weak legs
Tiredness
General feeling of really run down
Racing heart/palpitations
Headache every day
Breathlessness
Nausea on and off
Lighter periods than usual for the past 3 months

Does this sound like it could be b12?

I had those symtoms and many more.
20 mouth ulcers a week ( big sign of b12 deficiency.
BV every month.
Tired all the time .
Neuropathy.
And many more
2 years ago l started SI once a week and taking folic acid for absorption.
( Ampules from Germany work out £1 each).
All my symptoms have gone.
GPs don't know enough about this.. and your B12 tests are not usually accurate.
You cannot overdose on injections.. anything your body doesn't need you pee out.

Does anyone else suffer with these symptoms please?

FWIW I do have some of those symptoms. I went to see my GP last week to ask her to consider HRT. She's prescribed it, but has also arranged for me to have blood tests this week to check for low B12.

She told me that she and her partners in the practice have noticed an increase in low B12 levels over the last (I think she said) year or so. They ran a study recently and even she turned out to have them!

vipersnest1 · 09/10/2023 21:41

See your GP. With those symptoms, it could also be your thyroid. It would be very unwise to start self-medicating if you don't have a diagnosis (and anything you take in the lead up to tests could skew the results).

DragonFly98 · 09/10/2023 21:44

@QueenofTheSlipstreamVM Would you mind sharing a screen shot of the vials and needles you buy. I have looked previously on the Facebook group but I find it really confusing.

@vipersnest1

Oh no will it?! I thought I'd be able to mend it myself :(

Maybe you can - but you need to check that's what it is first.

MadKittenWoman · 10/10/2023 19:41

I've just been diagnosed with B12 deficiency AND hypothyroidism. You need to contact your doctor for full blood tests.

shapovalov · 10/10/2023 19:52

@MadKittenWoman

This is exactly what I'm thinking as my thyroid looks a little swollen - were your symptoms like mine?

mumof2many1943 · 10/10/2023 19:55

My DD who has Down Syndrome and hypothyroidism has very low B12, she had a week of daily B12 injections and they are testing her for Coeliac disease. She also gets oral fungal infections.
Please visit your gp and I hope you sort things out soon.

RabbitsRock · 10/10/2023 19:57

I have B12 injections 3 monthly which have been an absolute game changer. I was experiencing some awful symptoms, including a permanently churning tummy & tiredness beyond anything I had ever experienced. Really wasn’t functioning for quite a while. I agree with pps - get yourself a full set of bloods rather than try & fix it yourself in case it isn’t B12. Good luck OP. 🍀🍀🍀

Cinnamonspice1 · 10/10/2023 20:08

Hope this might be helpful. I’d been feeling really fatigued for many months. My symptoms were as follows and got worse with time

  • waking up tired with a heavy head and aching body
  • shortness of breath doing small chores
  • not being able to sleep
  • feeling nauseous
  • Strange numb tingling feelings down my arms and legs

had a full blood test done and I was low in vitamin d and magnesium, slightly low, don’t remember how much now exactly. Taking the prescribed high dose of vitamin d and magnesium made me feel so much better within a week.

I think doctors in the uk don’t prescribe vitamins until you are really low. Don’t suffer and get checked. I regretted not doing it sooner than I did.

shapovalov · 10/10/2023 20:16

@Cinnamonspice1

Extremely similar - my tingling tends to only be in my fingers but I put this down to my job as I make handmade things.

shapovalov · 10/10/2023 20:16

The symptom that is bothering me the most is how difficult it is to go upstairs - it's like my legs are so heavy.

Can a vitamin deficiency really cause such a strong symptom?!

@DragonFly98
I get these. I have to use Google translate but I’ve ordered a couple of times and they arrive really quickly with no bother.

Thank you that's really helpful

soupweather · 11/10/2023 21:00

Don’t take tablets for b12. If you’ve got pernicious anemia, your body can’t absorb them so it’s a waste of time. You need to speak to your GP and get bloods done.

Pancakefam · 11/10/2023 21:17

@NeverWornACropTop
I've tried to order these but it says I need an address in Germany.. is that right? If so, what do you put?

shapovalov · 11/10/2023 22:05

@soupweather

I highly doubt mine is that version as I'm sure if I do have it it's due to my disordered eating.
I will see the gp anyway

OP posts:
Tissle · 01/12/2023 19:38

It sounds like it could be B12 deficiency as mine is very low and I've been struggling for months - also had the nausea, breathlessness and lighter periods too. Unfortunately the threshold for deficiency is very low in this country!

Pinkpinkpink15 · 01/12/2023 20:01

Yeah the threshold in the U.K. is well below what it should be. Getting full blood tests through my GP is like getting rocks through a needle.

Biznatch · 01/12/2023 21:41

I went to the physio recently and from my symptoms she thinks I might have B12 deficiency. I'm still waiting for my GP to review her email and contact me about next steps (if any) so in the meantime I've just ordered a test from Superdrug to see if I'm deficient.

I figure that will either give me peace of mind or ammo to make the GP give me treatment. You can't just leave B12 deficiency as it can be very harmful.

Tissle · 02/12/2023 09:22

Definitely good to get checked. You just need to make sure you haven't been supplementing with B12 as that can skew the results make the level higher than it actually is.

TheJoyousExpert · 27/02/2024 15:32

Hi @shapovalov
sorry I know this has been a while, but did you ever get to the bottom of this?
I hope you did and feel better now! 😊
