Hot tea spilt on my baby

Hi guys,

Me and my husband this morning was about to eat breakfast. My 5 month old was on his father's lap and we was talking. The mug of tea was out of reach but some how he leaned over and grabbed the tea and it spilt everywhere! On his hand and legs. I reacted faster than ever before, I grabbed him and took him straight in the kitchen and put his leg and hand under cool running water. He was crying a lot bevause of the hot tea and my reaction and the cold water made his reaction worse. He was already upset because he was hungry and tired. I feel terrible, I took him to the table to feed him whilst I ate too. I called 111 straight away and they told me what to do and they said to go to the A and E. However, after the incident there's no red skin, no blisters, absolutely nothing on his skin, looks all normal. It was initially a bit pinkish. He woke up from his nap a happy baby and in no pain at all too. Advice from my family was to see how he is in a few hours and his skin has no signs or marks of any burn at all then he's fine.

It's been 2 hours and we were told to visit within 4 hours, he's absolutely fine and has not cried. No marks at all and the skin is absolutely fine. I think it's literally a miracle!! It was very hot tea.

My question is, shall I take him anyway or will he be okay? What will they do there? Is it just to treat any damaged skin? As I said, there's no sign of anything on his skin at all. I've spilt it on myself before accidentally and initially it hurts but it's never burnt me either.

I feel like such a terrible mother. He's 5 months and loves grabbing everything!! He's so active and I'm so scared for his safety. I barely go to the toilet without having someone watch him or I open the door and watch him in my en suite even during a quick pee. I can't even cook in the kitchen without checking on him every minute, my mom thinks I'm too much normally and now this incident has frightened me even more.

Some very unhelpful people online 🙄

If they told you to go back I'd do it...I imagine not following medical advice after an injury to a baby is a red flag

AutumnNanny · 08/10/2023 17:24

How long did you hold his arm & leg under the water?
it's easy to stop too soon, especially when they're so distressed anyway.

tvhe burn could be deeper and come up later.

i wouldn't put him in the bath tonight, even tepid water could be painful for him.

'it was out of reach'. Well, clearly not!

however, learn from it, octopus arms can reach much further than you think!!

you & DH would be best off getting travel mugs, even if he grabs one, not much comes out.

i doubt there is one person, ever, who hadn't had an accident with a baby/young child. They're a nightmare waiting to happen!!

let us know how you get onx

@Comedycook if you actually read the updates you will see that OP has already been to A&E

@curaçao
I mean I didn't put it on the edge or near the edge of the table. He's just started to lean over and grab things. That's what I meant. The nurse even said they'll find ways to do it and it is unfortunately common.

@Valerianandfoxglovesoup your right unfortunately:( everyone was so kind at the hospital with the incident and what happened, including you and some others but some are just so unhelpful and make you feel even worse than you already do! :( he's my son and I can't live without him that's how much I love him and this was definitely an accident which I will learn from.

A good 15 minutes, I called 111 straight away after I took him to the kitchen to put his legs and hand under cool water and they advised me how long etc @AutumnNanny
He's absolutely fine as said in my update post, no burns. So happy he got away with no burn at all. Skin looks absolutely normal and he's happy

Sorry I missed that. And just to say I wasn't insinuating the op had done anything wrong. Just how it could be perceived by professionals if you didn't go back to be checked. Anyway, great to hear he's ok op.

The reason for my post asking for advice was to see if this has happened to anyone before where they've had LOs had tea dropped on them and left no burn or red skin or nothing and taken them to the A&e for them to see the same and send them home. Normally, I get a reaction soon after on my skin once I burnt it but even after a few hours there was no burn or anything. I wanted to see if reactions come up after on a baby as their skin is different and more sensitive. The pd knew 111 would've told me to come and check it out anyway as he saw what I saw and said everything is fine. I am glad I took him anyway to ease my mind and I also feared if a reaction did occur after hours or a few days I would regret my decision If I didn't take him.
