Anyone know anything about iron supplements in liquid form?

I've heard that you don't get side effects with the liquid supplement.

Does anyone know or have experience?

Yes. Floradix or the stuff you put in orange juice (name escapes me grrr).

I didn't like the stuff you dissolve in the juice - it tasted metallic. Floradix really agreed with me and worked wonders.

We bought some just last week for DS as he was found to be anaemic when he had his appendix out. It's called Floradix and is suitable for adults and children from 1. No probs so far - we got it from a local health food shop.

well.....if and when I have had to have iron, I don;t go for supplements as they are vile.....liquid or tablets.

I buy 'spa-tone', which is a mineral/iron rich liquid in tiny sachets that you can drink as they are, or mix with orange juice to help the iron absorb faster and better.

they come in a huge orange box from boots IIRC.

HTH

foxinsocks · 06/03/2008 20:35

oh yes, that's it spatone . Although, when I was really short of iron, they did the trick. I find the Floradix kinder on my tum.

BroccoliSpears · 06/03/2008 20:46

Specifically, do you avoid the constipation issue?

Am a bit nervous about being on iron supplements and then giving birth and then [horror] being constipated after giving birth.

oh yeah, that was my reason for it!!!

I never had the metallic issue that foxinsocks says about, but then everything tastes metalic to me when I am low, so can;t really comment!!!

cerys · 06/03/2008 20:49

I took iron tablets when pregnant with DD1 and got horribly constipated. I bought the Spatone sachets when I was expecting DS and had no horrid side effects, and they seemed to work very quickly. I still take Spatone now, but just 1 sachet a day.

foxinsocks · 06/03/2008 20:50

I've never been constipated with Floradix (far TMI but only for you Broccoli lol). Floradix has lots of herby fruity things that help avoid the constipation issue. Wasn't on Spatone long enough to find out.

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 06/03/2008 20:51

yes i have lots of knowledge of this - will just read what others have said

BroccoliSpears · 06/03/2008 20:55

Thank you.

Will look up spatone and floradix.

Why do they prescribe constipation making things to heavily pregnant people? Surely it's just mean.

sytron

i take this - turns my stomach but its a sicky pregnancy anyway and last time i took it and was fine

it lifts iton in notime and far far more effective than spa tone and floridix - the iron content like 10 x higher

i get it on prescription - its pricey but i wont take iron tabs due to vegetarian reasons

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 06/03/2008 20:57

oh AND if anything sytron gives you the opposite effect to constipation and as a woman who suffers consti in pg it is a joy

Psychomum5 · 06/03/2008 20:58

tis men that do it brocolli.....they snigger at all the new things they can invent to make our lives even more miserable!!!!

tis their way of keeping us down-trodden and relient on them I swear

BroccoliSpears · 06/03/2008 21:06

Oh I hadn't even thought about the vegetarian issue.

Right. Of to see midwife / gp for vegetarian, non-bunging-up solution on prescription.

Spa tone is great. I can take some of that without not being able to poo for a month afterwards (I get blocked up easily )

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 06/03/2008 21:47

spa tone is like drinking molten metal!
