can you ask the dentist for some gas and air? my dentist gave me a whiff once when i was having a tooth out. just made me relax

pebbles2004pebbles · 17/12/2004 07:59

hi np - is it the same stuff they use during labour? if so im having some of that!

OP posts:
nailpolish · 17/12/2004 08:01

its called entonox.

mind you, i was in a dental hospital, so maybe its just available there, but its totally worth asking.

pebbles2004pebbles · 17/12/2004 08:39

Just phoned DEntist to cancel appointment, as a) very scared and b) not feeling very good today.... cheeky people want to charge me £45 to cancel!!! Guess Im gonna have to gather the energy from somewhere and go! Surely this cant be right when i dont pay for my dental treatment???

OP posts:
nailpolish · 17/12/2004 08:52

that cant be right. is it an nhs dentist? i would understand if a. it was private or b. it was cosmetic treatment but its not.

but anyway, you should go. i would be more scared of the horrendous pain if i didnt get the filling done tbh

dont worry, tomorrow itll all be over and you can forget about it

xxxxxxx

pebbles2004pebbles · 17/12/2004 08:54

Thanks np... i know i shouldnt wimp out but im just terrified. thinking about taking Kalms to try and chill out a bit.... roll on lunch time when it will all be over!

TheHollyAndTheTwiglett · 17/12/2004 09:01

go, get it over with then by this time tomorrow you'll be posting about how brave you were and how little there is to worry about

entonox is gas and air

I would personally call the dentist and let them know how terrified you feel at the moment .. they know how to deal with scared patients they get it lots and they can help calm you down

you won't feel anything due to anaesthetics .. the most you will feel is some pushing and shoving ... c'mon woman you've had a baby .. this is easy

you can do it

(I am not surprised they charge for cancelled appointments BTW .. they're losing business if you don't show up they have a dentist sitting there twiddling his / her thumbs)

LIZS · 17/12/2004 09:04

I had one done at 18 (mid A levels !) and treatment was spread over several appointments with temporary caps on it in between. However it probably depends on how deep the problem is. As far as I recall had a couple of injections and the main problem was fatigue from having mouth open for so long. Perhaps he can give you a relaxant if you ask (I had one for IUD fitting) and ask him to give you breaks if you, say, raise your hand.

Be prepared to feel a bit off afterwards for a couple of days as the bacteria etc need to work out of your system but ultimately it is worth it to be rid of the pain.

good luck

ps Think it is quite common for them to charge for late cancellations, even NHS ones, because of such high demand.

pebbles2004pebbles · 17/12/2004 09:05

Thanks...

I am just a wimp huh! Even having dd was easier than this - was induced and given epidural before pains really got going! I LOVED MY HOSPITAL! i feel like i need an epidural in my mouth for today!

OP posts:
TheHollyAndTheTwiglett · 17/12/2004 09:06

what? you think they're going to do anything without aneasthetic?

if you managed an epidural I'm sure you'll manage the locals a dentist can give you

mind over matter matey, mind over matter

it WILL be fine

pebbles2004pebbles · 17/12/2004 09:10

thanks peeps. I WILL GO TO DENTIST. I WILL BE BRAVE. I WILL JUST SEE IT AS AN HOUR LAYING DOWN CHILLING OUT WITH NO BABY TO THINK ABOUT. I WILL BE FINE. IT WONT HURT..... i hope xxx

aloha · 17/12/2004 10:10

Ah yes, that's my mum's definition of tired...when you look forward to the dentist's appointment as a chance for a nice, quiet, lie down - you can do it! Good luck.

Chocol8 · 17/12/2004 10:12

Let us know how you got on Pebbles, like the idea of a lie down and a relax. Thinking of you. x

spacedonkey · 17/12/2004 10:15

chocol8, how are you? I was wondering how you were feeling?

pebbles - good luck. I won't say RC treatment was the most pleasant experience I've ever had, but you will be anaesthetised, so it won't hurt!

I DID IT! I was brave and it didnt hurt all that much - just a little uncomfortable really! Laid back, held onto the photo keyring i have of dd and let them get on with it! Back again on 7/1 for them to "finish off"! Didnt I do well after being such a baby!

nailpolish · 17/12/2004 14:08

glad to hear it pebbles

bonniej · 17/12/2004 14:24

I'm always like this before any medical procedure and get so worked up. Afterwards you wonder why you were so worried and feel so pleased with yourself that you went. Good on you for going in the end. I had to have a wisdom tooth out recently but insisted on being sedated. Cost me over 100 pound but worth every penny. didn't remember a thing
