Food poisoning

Hi everyone, I've just had food poisoning confirmed as campylobacter. I can't think for the life of me, what it was that caused it. Thankfully the rest of the family are fine.

What I wanted to ask is, those of you who have had it, how long did it take to recover? I think I'm over the worst, but I feel so weak and tired. Got two young DDs as well, so rest is tricky. Just feeling so shattered!

My dd had it about a year ago. She had antibiotics from the dr which helped. She also had probiotic yogurts everyday which were recommended by a gastroenterologist. She bounced back pretty quickly.

My 75yo DM has just had this, she's on chemotherapy and so it caused neutropenic sepsis too.

She was treated in hospital due to the sepsis/cancer treatment BUT she actually bounced back surprisingly quickly.

The docs said it was likely to be caused by something pork based. No-one else in the household got it, despite eating the same food. Obviously for her it was her weakened immune system that made her susceptible.

Wishing you better OP Flowers

@Fifireee that's interesting about the antibiotics. The doctor who told me it was campylobacter said there was no treatment, and you had to let it run its course. Glad your DD got over it quickly.

@Almondandhoney gosh your poor mum. That must have been such a worry for you all. The immune system thing is interesting. I had my 4th bout of covid 3 and a bit weeks ago, so I wonder if that maybe made my immunity weaker than normal.

The diarrhoea had cleared up, but it has started again today (I had a normal dinner last night). I only weigh 50kg, so need to keep eating, but when I do I get diarrhoea again! So frustrating.

Yes I think that could well be something to do with it.

Mum's diarrhoea gradually cleared up over a week or so, it did go away but took longer than the normal tummy bug etc.

Keep an eye on your electrolytes...maybe get some dioralyte or something to keep everything balanced - it threw mum's off course and made her feel worse

Watch out for ongoing IBS symptoms and lactose intolerance as after effects. Both can be nasty and long lasting.

Thanks ladies. I can honestly barely eat a thing. May ring the GP and ask about antibiotics if it doesn't clear up.
