Hi
so I just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who gave me some really great advice 3 months ago after I had an HBA1C result of 50.

Originally, 3 months before that, it was 49 and even though I cut out cake, biscuits and any processed sugar products, it went up to 50 instead of down!

Today though, after my chat to the diabetic nurse in June and having been given such good info about really low/no carbs on here, it’s gone really well and today I’ve just rang and asked and they said ‘borderline’.
I asked what the result was and she said 44 so I’m so pleased and still obviously going to live my life eating very minimal carbs from now on.

Ive been eating Greek yoghurt with almond butter and berries for brekkie, a keto wrap for lunch with ham and salad or eggs or cheese or a bowl of just soup etc and for dinner, no bread, no potatoes, no pasta, no rice etc and so meat/fish and veggies/salad.

The only sweet thing I’ve eaten was on my birthday 2 weeks ago when I went out with my MIL and had a small slice of raspberry and coconut tart.

I know that it can take a lot longer than 3 months to come down so staying on it and now for the next 3 months, I’m going to spend more time trying out more adventurous low carb recipes.

Thanks again everyone - if I hadn’t had all your advice, I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t have worked so well!
Oh also, ive almost gone down a whole clothes size and my jeans are hanging off me and looking baggy.

Great news Smile

@Verbena17 I remember your thread and commenting. I went from 44 to 38 doing similar

Verbena17 · 08/10/2023 13:28

Yes i remember you had also done it!
I now need to work on cutting back on my dairy I think to get into the not pre-diabetic range.

@Verbena17 I think you will find if you carry on as you are doing that it will naturally fall to the late 30s - I'm not sure dairy makes much difference (although personally I have oat milk in coffee etc)

Verbena17 · 08/10/2023 14:57

@Crikeyalmighty
Yes but I mean to overall reduce my weight and fat 😂. Without my gallbladder I’m not supposed to be eating much saturated fat 😬 but without carbs, I’ve found myself eating cheese - although I’ve been more careful recently. I’m conscious of eating more protein so that’s been better too.

I don't have a gallbladder either - Yep eating more cheese is an easy habit to get into-

@Verbena17 if you can't eat bread, potatoes, pasta or rice what do you do to keep hunger pangs at bay ?

Gloriously · 08/10/2023 18:55

I would love to see a link to your thread for low carb recipe ideas.

Coyoacan · 08/10/2023 22:52

Well done, OP. I know it is not easy to change your diet, but it is so worthwhile.

I eat high protein (18g) yoghurts - usually one per day with a tablespoon of flax seeds in it with blueberries.

Or I’ll have a few cashews. But generally, I don’t snack. I’ll have a cup of tea mid morning and mid afternoon and maybe one at night - that liquid fills me up so I’m not hungry. Plus, my meals fill me up to be honest.
Im eating a lot less.

I still eat a couple of dates a day - although higher in sugar but good for keeping you regular.
Then there’s the cheese! 😂
I always have a pack of wafer thin ham in the fridge so sometimes will have a slice or two and pop a mange tout inside it.

Thanks - it’s not always easy. We go to Center Parcs at Xmas and I’ve just booked the restaurants. Definitely doesn’t look as inspiring when you’re doing low carb but I’m sure it’ll be fine.

I don’t think I’ve got a thread for low carb ideas have I? 😬

I have to say, right from the word go, I thought I would be able to make easy swaps from flour and sugar for things like scones and cakes/pancakes.

Oh my goodness - it’s been dire, think I’ve tried 3 or 4 recipes using ground almonds as the flour sub and /or coconut flour. Still haven’t found anything worth making again. I’ve thrown most in the bin. The only ready made keto product I buy regularly is the keto wraps from Tesco. Other than that, I’m not bothering as they just taste a bit bleugh.

@Verbena17 I do agree that the less you eat, the less you feel the urge , I don't snack either apart from an odd slice of ham or an oatcake with hummus or maybe 5 red grapes

Verbena17 · 10/10/2023 00:08

Are oatcakes lower in carbs? I’ve avoided oats - I was having porridge daily until all this began - I really miss oats! But my body obviously doesn’t like carbs so ho-hum I guess.

Crikeyalmighty · 10/10/2023 10:25

@Verbena17 they are about 6g each
Whereas a bowl of porridge is about 30.
