DENTAL Soft Lump Inside Tooth Extraction Site

I had an upper 2nd from back molar removed 3.5 weeks ago after increasing pain from a crown.

I was meant to have a root canal but the pain was so bad I had to have it removed as an emergency.

The pain resolved and last week I felt the hole getting shallower.

Past few days it has felt soft and squishy with my tongue and when I look there is a small soft lump the same colour as my gum, inside the tooth socket, above the gum line.

My mind is going over time about it and I have been foolishly googling.

Anyone had anything similar? Looking for some reassurance if anyone had experience of this. Thanks in advance.

This maybe?

What is the fleshy lump after tooth extraction?
One of the most common problems faced by patients after a tooth extraction is swelling of soft tissues near the tooth hole. Such oedema can occur during the extraction of any tooth, but often, the most prominent is in the removal of chewing teeth (molars), including wisdom teeth.

That is most likely @AThickLayerOfLard but OP, did the dentist mention anything about your sinuses? Have you had any symptoms with them? They can be tricksy with top teeth (which is what that looks like although you’re no David Bailey! 😂). Do you have a review booked? Give it a week or so more and see how it goes.

Lisalisaandcultjam · 04/10/2023 18:22

@AThickLayerOfLard it could well be this. Thanks for replying, much appreciated. Where did you find this so I can find it again?

@Silverdogblue 🤣 indeed I am no David Bailey. Thanks very much for replying too.

It is my upper molar. The dentist took an xray today but couldn't see anything apart from the empty socket. I've not had any sinus type symptoms before or after the tooth was taken out.

There was previously a crown there for over 20 years which broke almost 2 years ago. I had it replaced and had nothing but bother with it. The discomfort was getting more frequent so I saw the dentist about a month ago and was booked for root canal. At that point they could see no infection but thought that the root was beginning to die off, hence the symptoms.

Over the next few days the pain became excruciating and I ended up calling out of hours and the removed the crown and then the tooth.

He didn't say at the time it was a difficult removal but did have to dig about and at the end said "that's it all out now", which made me think it was a difficult one.

The dentist today said there could be some small fragments to be reabsorbed or work their way out not showing on the xray today. She also said if it was a difficult extraction that the healing was over compensating. She said to go back in 2 weeks time.

Sounds under control then, which is good news OP! Old root filled teeth are fuckers tbh, they frequently have some sort of cyst and or chronic infection which takes time to resolve once they’re extracted. A normal broken bone is 6 weeks healing so, whilst this bone has a great blood supply and heals slightly differently, time will be the best medicine.

I smashed my finger off a door frame 2 weeks ago and it’s agony, giving it another 2 weeks before I go to the dr though as I’m 99.9% convinced it’s just bruised.

Oh crowned but same difference. Better out than in etc. or as my ancient prof used to say “better an empty house than an unruly tenant”.

Lisalisaandcultjam · 04/10/2023 20:20

@Silverdogblue thank you, that's reassuring about an old filled tooth. Although it's a royal pain, at least it is known. I was searching earlier and couldn't really find much so was feeling a bit of a freak lol.

I hope your finger gets better, that can be really painful. I am convinced I broke two toes in the summer and didn't think it was worth going to A&E with at the time. They took weeks and weeks to resolve and even now, there is still an indent in both toes - I dropped a tin of tomatoes edge side down onto them.

@Lisalisaandcultjam i have Same can barely open my mouth

Lisalisaandcultjam · 05/10/2023 11:43

@Deedoo I'm sorry to hear that. You sound worse than me with yours. What has your dentist said?

Deedoo · 06/10/2023 19:17

@Lisalisaandcultjam was yours painful ? Mine was wisdom removal and I got antibiotics

Lisalisaandcultjam · 06/10/2023 20:34

@Deedoo no its not painful, just feels a bit weird when I suck in. It bleeds when I brush my teeth.

The dentist said she didn't think it was infected and was probably an over healing and that this was most likely to do with debris left over.

Funnily enough, I had two small pieces of tooth come away from down the side of the squishy lump so what the dentist said sounds right enough.

@Lisalisaandcultjam did it hurt when pieces came out was your tooth broken

Lisalisaandcultjam · 06/10/2023 23:38

@Deedoo I had had my tooth removed. It had a crown over it too. They broke that away first and then it took quite a bit of effort to take the tooth out underneath it.

Since it was removed almost 4 weeks ago now I've had some small fragments or tooth or crown coming out. When a bit is working its way to the surface it feels hard to touch, but not sore.

The raised bumpy area within the tooth socket just feels a but weird and some slight discomfort.

My own dentist surmised that because the tooth was probably not in a good shape and that there was quite a bit of effort to get it out and that there is debris in there left over, that is probably the reason why the healing tissue is overgrowing.
