Has anyone had breast cyst after a hysterectomy or over age 50?

Hi,

My Mum has today been referred for a 2 week wait referral to the breast clinic for a lump with an achy arm and breast.

The GP said that breast cysts are less likely due to her full hysterectomy 2 years ago. I'm just wondering if anyone has had a breast cyst either after a hysterectomy or over age 50?

She's had terrible cysts in the past which required draining. She was even septic with one episode!

Thanks in advance

I've had quite a few, but all drained off and that was the end of them. One of mine was septic, absolutely horrible.

I ended up coming off my HRT because of them. Not had any since.

@AuntyMabelandPippin That's really interesting. Thanks. She's currently on HRT patches due to the hysterectomy. I wonder if this can make them more common too? Thank you for posting your experience!

This is interesting. I had a hysterectomy (but kept my ovaries) and I've since had several cysts since starting hrt.

@RuddyLaura Wow ok, that is really interesting. When did you have your hysterectomy if you don't mind me asking?

I had my first cyst about 4 years after my hysterectomy, possibly coinciding with perimenopause/starting hrt. They said I had quite a scattering of them but needed that one draining. This was a couple of years ago and I've had others come up and go down by themselves, but about to have another one looked at.

I'm not a dr however I believe breast cysts are a result of poor hormone clearance. So hormones are kinda building up and not clearing from the lymphatic system.
Good healthy liver and healthy stools remove excess oestrogen. She may have extra oestrogen from the HRT.

katem98 · 03/10/2023 07:22

@MrsMorrisey Thanks for that. Part of her womb was fused to her bowel so she's had a couple of issues with passing stool since (consultant said this was normal). She's been quite constipated and often has to take stool softeners. Maybe this could relate to the slow passing of hormones then?

I have had many cysts and recently spoke to my consultant about HRT. He told me that whilst it was safe for it was very likely to cause more cysts.

@septemberoctobernovember Thank you! That's really interesting.

I am a cyst-y person and it was the reason for my hysterectomy years ago. I have had a large breast cyst for over a decade and a couple of years ago, well after my hysterectomy and after years of HRT, I got another on the other side. It's fine. Not been drained but checked out and no concerns.

NashvilleQueen · 03/10/2023 07:48

Oh I'm also over 50. Should have said.

Really interesting to hear about processing of oestrogen - (tmi!) my stools could be better so I will try dietary changes to help flush liver through. Any recommendations for a liver boost?

I'm 54 and have a number of cysts. I
have had them on and off for years, with a number having been drained. The last one was done last year because it had got very big and my arm ached constantly. I've not had a hysterectomy and I'm not doing HRT. My gynaecologist doesn't seem bothered by the cysts. She just says I need to make sure they are checked regularly.

Octobermeterreadtime · 03/10/2023 14:11

I have apparently a family of cysts! (3!) I am 52. Told they will disappear before I am 60 providing I don't take hrt...

KnittedCardi · 03/10/2023 14:41

I've always had a lot of cysts, none needed draining though. They were first spotted with first mammogram, which was about age 48 round here. I was called into the breast centre, and told by a lovely nurse my breasts looked like Swiss cheese! Great.

They have come and gone since, sometimes you can see or feel them, but they haven't ever caused any issues. I am 58 and have been in HRT for two years, no change, as far as I know.

Also I have only had one ovary since early 40's.

MrsMorrisey · 04/10/2023 00:02

Just to add to this. I have multiple cysts and I've been taking 3000mg of evening primrose oil for a month and they do seem to be less painful.
We'll see what happens if I continue.

Nikki360 · 04/10/2023 01:08

I've read that if you are prone to cysts then if you take hrt you will continue to get them. If you don’t take hrt they usually go with menopause x

I've just been told that today! Grin

Three big ones and a load of small ones.
I'd only found one myself, and worryingly so had my gp!

Thank you all so much. She had a few cysts drained today but there was one trickle lump so they did a biopsy. The doc said this is quite common as old cysts are usually tougher and harder to drain. Has anyone had experience of this before? Thanks
