Lactose intolerance

Have had IBS for many years but about a year ago i noticed things like cereal and coffee would set me off so changed my cereal.....nope. Gave up yoghurt years ago because that made me bloated. Ive realised its not the cereal or the coffee, its the bloody milk Changed to lactose free yesterday to see how i get on. I tried my usual caramel latte in Costa last Friday with oat milk . It was foul and i didnt react well to it either. Ive asked a couple of coffee chains whether they do lactose free milk. Nope Im going to miss my lattes but it is what it is. It was a nice treat once or twice a week but not worth the gut trouble.

You could always take a lactase enzyme pill before you have your usual latte.

Hello, lactose intolerant here too. Pret do a nice coconut milk which works well in coffee and gives it a lovely flavour - well, lovely if you like coconut! (I do). I too have found most coffee shops opt for oat or soya milk rather than lactose free. I presume it's because they want to cater to vegans and don't want to have too many "other milk" options. Disappointing though. I have been known to carry my own milk around in a small flask ready to add to coffee when out.

I went into Home Bargains and stocked up on Beanies Coffee to have at home with the Arla lactose free milk. I got three jars of the Cinder Toffee which ive had before so i know i like it, a variety pack and a Christmas variety pack. Not quite the same as a latte but it will do.

I didnt know lactase pills even existed Thanks.

@HoHoHoliday Im guessing they will go for what makes the most profit which will be the vegan options

Wondering if it’s the protein in the milk your reacting too as opposed to the sugars ?

Have a look at CMPA - lactose free diet won’t help this you need to be completely dairy free x

Almond milk is a really nice alternative, as is coconut.

I love my decaf coconut latte

JenniferBooth · 01/10/2023 19:32

Check out going low FODMAP. I have IBS and 6 months ago cut out onion, garlic, most gluten & started buying lacto free dairy. Massive change for me but what I notice is beans or onion causes big flare up. Fodmap info is quite complicated I thought but making it all into yes/no lists for main things you eat helps hugely.

I have found that anything either cooked or frozen is fine for me, something must happen to the lactose in the temperature change. But fresh products have an awful effect on me and I can be in pain for days. Arla have a wonderful range of products including the milk of course. Their lactose-free cheese is fab and also their cream - both taste exactly the same as the lacto-ful equivalents.

Had the opposite problem for the past couple of days Had to struggle to go to the loo Then thought i would chance it and have a caramel latte with normal milk in Kaspas. Within an hour and a half i needed the loo.
Im pretty sure its the lactose. My coffee shop days are over
So im going to save what i would normally spend add some more to it and come the Black Friday sales may treat myself to a beauty advent calendar.
