Is Benedan health worth getting?

I have a 2 year wait for a hysterectomy on the NHS. I have read up on Benedan health and it seems to good to be true. I'd love to hear of people's experiences of them. Thank you x

I think they're great. I've been a member for years and have been helped twice in difficult situations.
They are now though under a lot of pressure as more people join, surprise, surprise so changes in their service are happening. You have to be a member for six months before you can request help and it's purely diagnostic and minor procedures such as colonoscopy etc. They will pay for osteopathy etc.
If you research online, you'll see good reviews on Trust pilot etc, they are genuinely good.

(Tenuous but true link coming up!) My cousin's wife is in insurance and knows what she's talking about. She's been on at us all to get this sorted for the whole family for AGES. She swears by it - we've never had to call on it, but soon my mum will (she's waited the 6m) so I'll let you know!

Thank you so much for your replies. I am definitely going to give them a call. I've looked on Trust Pilot and I'm very impressed with the reviews. It just sounds too good to be true 😊

We've been members for years as DH paid through work. Had a couple of procedures done through them, the last being a cataract operation just after Covid.
I had a choice of hospitals and surgeons and they put me through as a temporary Bupa member.
I recommend them to all my friends.

Yes, 100% worth it. I work in a private hospital and we see lots of Benenden patients these days. On a personal level I used it when teen DD was first diagnosed with scoliosis and they were absolutely fabulous. She saw 2 separate consultants and had multiple MRIs + X-rays all done in a matter of weeks. No fuss, just a few quick phone calls! Obviously they couldn’t cover the major spinal surgery she ended up needing but getting all her initial diagnostics done privately sped things up massively. For the very little it costs it is such fantastic service, I’ve recommended it to lots of friends and family.

It’s not a substitute for ‘proper’ health insurance though. Basically Benenden is a great + affordable alternative, but if you can afford more then go for the real insurance. We learnt our lesson after having to wait a year on the NHS for her scoliosis surgery so we now have DD covered under a full Bupa policy. I told myself I’d never see her wait in pain + have to put her life on hold ever again. It’s £500 a year I’d much rather have in my pocket but sadly a sign of the times!

My grandad was with them

Thank you 🙏 You are so right and if I had a crystal ball I would have got private health years ago. I work for the NHS and see daily the struggles we face 🥹

It's a mutual, non-profit, so a bit like how the insurance companies work in some EU countries.

Muddle2000 · 18/10/2023 15:04

It only covers diagnostics and minor ops You need to understand what it covers before you subscribe

Redandpinkstripes · 19/10/2023 07:12

I've joined today. For £12.80, I think it is worth it. I am hoping they will do my hysterectomy after 6 months 🙏

Yes , I get it though work and it’s brilliant. A colleague had a hysterectomy through them . She was in a private hospital and said the aftercare was also really good.
Thankfully I have not needed anything major , but find the GP service very good . They give an exact time slot and always call back in that slot . They are able to prescribe , write fit notes and ask your own Gp to see you if they think you need face to face .

Muddle2000 · 20/10/2023 10:53

Gosh Did they really do a hysterectomy !! I didn.t think they
Did major surgery

ForeverYellow · 21/10/2023 06:15

Yea , this was less than a year ago she had it .

Most private medical insurance does not cover conditions which existed before you sign up.

Most private medical insurance does not cover conditions which existed before you sign up.

In the UK that might be the case, but not in most western European countries.
