Wisdom tooth removal - what to eat?

Having my wisdom tooth removed in hospital on Friday and just doing my weekly online shop. If you've had this done before what did you eat afterwards? Am I confined to soup? If so, for how long? Could you eat other fairly soft things after a day or so? Thanks :-)

I did eat a lot of soup afterwards, but I also ate a lot of mashed sweet potato and salmon. I found I could flake the salmon into tiny little pieces that were easy to get down without chewing, and it meant I actually felt full. I had two out on the bottom around ten days apart. Let's just say I ate a lot of mushy foods that month and took a lot of painkillers!

It depends on how you feel and your jaws range of motion. But if you can chew on the other side you can eat pretty normally (if you feel up to it).

Thank you. It's only one side so crossing fingers I can chew a bit on the other.

Great idea re mash, will add some!

Anything you can blend plus soups, mashed potato etc. Protein shakes & puddings, custard, yoghurt, scrambled & boiled eggs.

Yogurt fruit corners. Only needed to be very careful for a day, after that just be cautious where you chew for a few days.

Mash, scrambled egg, cottage cheese, mashed avocado, houmous, smoothies, porridge, yoghurt

When I've had teeth out I've been fine to eat on the other side, it's more about avoiding anything that could get stuck in your socket

I made the mistake of eating rice and then got a bit stuck in the hole.

The first two days you'll probably only manage soup as moving your mouth will make the stitches hurt. Go for blended vegetable soups for fibre content. Last thing you want alongside the recovery is an epic case of constipation.

Mashed potatoes (with lots of butter & mature cheddar) and baked beans is delicious. Very soft eggs also work but I found them a bit bland as a main meal. Also check the baby/toddler food section for melty puff type snacks. Some are surprisingly delicious and don't need any chewing.

Mash and gravy was my staple, with corned beef if I felt fancy. Definitely soup for the first day or two - get some miso soup just in case you don't feel you can stomach anything.

Ready brek ended up being my staple. And bananas!

Smoothies?

Lalaloulous · 28/09/2023 09:42

Thanks all, very helpful.

Oh yes mashed potatoes with cheese and butter! I loved that!
I had both the lower ones removed at the same time so couldn't chew on either side.

Also, found using baby cutlery easier to use as it's flatter and easier to get in when you can't open your mouth very easily.
