...am starting to freak out a bit. This bug started on sunday with fever and a bit of vomiting - both quickly passed but he's had the most dreadful squits ever since - copious amounts of liquid and frequent nappy changes (about 8 per day)!

Was advised to do as much BF as possible (had cut down to only feeding a little at night so my supply is low) and watered down formula milk. After no imporvement, yesterday did dirolyte only for 18 hours which seemed to provide a bit of relief - not totally though - and today went back to watered down milk and diorlyte alternating for feeds. But the copious bum explosions continue!

He's not dehydrated and I've seen doc twice who tells me I've jsut got to ride it out. But scared at how little food he is getting, and milk obviously irritating his poor bowel...should i perhaps cut back on milk and give some baby rice. Doc says I could just do dirolyte - I know dehydration is biggest risk, but am worried how little calories he is getting and becoming worried. Any advice MUCH appreciated xxxx

Don't worry about food intake atm. babies are designed to store a bit of fat to help if they are ill. Continue bf as much as possible. Make sure he doesn't get dehydrated and see your GP as much as you want to if you are worried.

My ds had terrible diahorrea a few months ago (but he is 2) it lasted 3 weeks and he would go up to 20 times a day. he lost a lot of weight, particualrly in the first week, but the dr wasn't worried about his food intake, we just had to make sure he drank plenty.

Hope your lo is feeling better soon.

I was told to avoid diary with my ds as apparently they can become intolerant to it for a little while after a tummy bug.

I shouldn't worry too much about calories at this stage, just stick to keeping him hydrated. BF is the easiest thing for him to digest so as much of that as possible, dioralyte is good as it tops up the important salts etc too.

I don't think there's a lot else you can give babies to be honest, just keep an eye on his fontanelle to make it isn't shrunken.

Sympathies - been there before and it's very worrying! However - my then 6mo ds had a nasty stomach bug, followed by diarrhoea which lasted for about 10 days. Dr said the best thing for him was breast milk - but he had recently stopped feeding from me (long story). So eventually we had to go with soy based formula, as he had developed lactose intolerance, thankfully short lived.
So as long as he is bright enough in himself, and taking fluids, then I think the doc sounds right.
Personally I would steer clear of the baby rice etc and especially anything dairy, and just keep bf as much as you can. Your supply will increase again.

My DD had this over the last week. I stuck to dioralyte for the first day or so with her usual BF in the evening. When she was really hungry I gave her a bit of pear & rice which went down very well. She is eating a bit of fruit puree now and is taking half milk half water.

She has been free from the diarrhoea for about 2 days now (it lasted best part of a week ) so will start her on normal milk again either this evening or tomorrow although she is now teething and has a miserable cold, poor little thing.

I also went to the Docs and they were not helpful. Luckily one of my friends from school is a pediatrician and she said that just liquid for a couple of days wouldn't do any harm at all but to offer fruit/ rice or something if DD seemed hungry. HTH

thank you all - will stay off the babyrice and try to stay calm, just such a worry. i can't help but be concerned that he is starving! he does seem to be taking enough liquid though, which is the main thing by the sounds of it.

anyone else's little one have this atm? xxx

My dd (19 months) has it. It's nasty. 10 nappy changes today, poor sausage.

She had a similar thing at 6 months, and I found a whole weekend on Dioralyte fixed the diarrhoea. Not working now though- she won't touch it . She's eating a bit of dry toast today though (day 3) - not that that's really relevant to you with your 7-month old.

Where are you? We're SE London and apparently everyone's got it. DD's nursery sent half the children home with it yesterday!

Sorry for delay botbot - we're west london, so not far from you. it's a nightmare, isn't it? i hope your dd gets better soon xx

Ooh, I work in west London. Wonder if I've carted the bug over to SE London and infected everyone?

DD is at home with DP today and running around happily. Phew. Hope your ds gets well soon too.
