HELP! Weird discharge in 4.5 year old girl

Am a bit worried. Dd asked me earlier to check that she'd wiped her bottom properly (as is her habit at the moment ) and I did a wipe to check and there was a pinky clear discharge. I got her to lie down and her vulva looked a bit sticky with pinky clear discharge too. There are stains on her knickers.
Any ideas about what this could be. Some sort of UTI/vaginal infection/thrush? What?
Googled and wished to goodness I hadn't because nothing directly comparable and oblique refs to potential abuse. I know that nothing of the sort has happened. She said that she hasn't hurt herself/scratched. She did have a bit of a sore gina the other day, and I put sudocreme on, because she looked a bit red.
Any help would be greatly appreciated because I am now rather concerned that if we go to the doctor they are going to think she's been abused or something.

I would take her to the dr as it is likely to be from an infection or thrush. I can understand your concern but if an infection is left it will only get worse.

Are you using bubble bath at bathtime? That is often the culprit. See what happens after bathing in water only for a few days. No soap on bottom either.

Or maybe a hormonal thing? She has recently grown taller, though isn't any where near being one of the taller ones in her class. Only weighs about 34 pounds. Is about 110cm max tall.

THanks so much for replies. Will use no bubble bath tonight (though only use an organic no nasties one, but can see that it might have an effect) and get her to wear knickers in bed to I can see if still happening tomorrow am. If it is will of course take her to the doctors. Was jsut kind of hoping that someone would be able to say "oh yes, that happened with my dd and social services were not informed".
She says she hasn't got any pain or aches, isn't peeing more than usual. Says she feels fine. But doesn't want to go swimming because she doesn't want her costume to get dirty

Realise that am now sounding like a neurotic person with an unhealthy fear of SS, when I'm not really.

I took my DD when she was young and SS was not informed - bubble bath was culprit - suggested by GP

Brill
Reading back through the posts I sound quite unhinged really. Just had been lulled into a false sense of children being healthy and no ptobs, no medicines, impetigo cleared up and the prospect of another rtip to the docs doesn't really fill me with glee. Hey ho, suppose was what I signed up for....

If she doesn't normally wear knickers in bed, perhaps she scratched herself in her sleep?
Some girls develope early too. I'm almost 44 and I showed big signs of starting periods at 5-6 years old. Medication stopped them though, but a very womanly discharge continued and I certainly wasn't abused.
Hope all is well.

NO you dont sound unhinged at all you sound like a worried mummy, that is all

It sounds very much like she might have an infection. Either a uti or some kind of thrush.

I used to suffer terribly as a child, and mum took me regularly to the Gp. I had horrible discharge once, with a uti. Blood in urine, and just a nasty puss also, from the urethra. Mum was never talked to about SS. I was on almost permanent anti-biotics. It was really miserable at that age.

I remember going to an out of hours GP once, when I was about 5 or 6 maybe? As I had a raging temperature, and unbearable pain with cystitis. She wanted to do a thorough examination, due to the reasons you suggest. I was SO upset, and felt so incredibly violated, as such a young age, I've never ever forgotten it. ( hence being able to recall the incident from so young)

Mum made a complaint to the Local H.A. She was informed at the time, that it was very unusual practice, to even consider such a thing, straight away. It should NOT be the first thing, thought of in such instances. especially as I had a long history of confirmed UTI's on my medical records. It should be a very very long way down the list of possibilities and when there are other things that would give the Dr those concerns.

I'm telling you about this, not to worry you more about it happening to your daughter, but to reassure you that it really is SO unlikely.

The biggest lesson to be learned young lady DO NOT RESEARCH HEALTH PROBLEMS ON THE WEB YOURSELF ok??

Do hope she is ok, poor little love, I really really do empathise.

Thanks so much for reassurance. Am at the internal you had Susie. Too right to complain.
Well no discharge overnight. She seemed quite perky this morning and went into school. I am going to keep an eye on things and may take her to the doctor tomorrow if there's a reoccurrance.
Thanks again! Am feeling less demented today.
Should add that another factor is that she had antibiotics recently for impetigo, and I klnow that these can trigger thrush.... But we shall see.
No more googling for me.

Not an actual internal Pooka, but it was very unpleasant.

Just to update, still similar discharge on Friday so I took her to the lovely GP who examined (I also took her knickers with me!), said didn't look like thrush, that dd prob has infection and has prescribed penicillin. Said it was quite common in girls of dd's age.

She was very reassuring and dd was not remotely phased by the exam (which was very low-key). So that's a relief.

DS has impetigo. So in total 6 Gp visits in one month. Am hoping that we'll have a better run of good health for a while.

Pooka - just to say that I had pink discharge when I had a UTI about 7 years ago that was coming from my urethra. Didn't feel ill in any way shape or form apart from a dull ache in my bladder region.

Glad GP was so reassuring.

pooka · 08/03/2008 22:02

Wilkie, that's interesting, because while dd has generally been feeling fine, no temp or anything, she has complained of a slight tummy ache.
Am obviously hoping that the antibiotics do the trick. Fingers crossed!
