DS2 (nearly 15 months) has had a nose bleed since yesterday morning....

He has had a cold/cough to varying degrees for the last 2 months, sometimes it is nothing but a bit of grumpiness, sometimes he is coughing and wheezing really badly. Doctor gave him an inhaler last time he had a cough and this does seem to help when he is wheezy. But this nose bleed, it started yesterday morning, it isn't pouring out or anything, but is pooling around his nose, it seemed to stop yesterday afternoon, started again early evening and stopped, and has started again now. It is still not pouring out, but there is more blood coming out today than yesterday, and he has just coughed and splatted blood everywhere, it wasn't a deep cough, so I am guessing the blood is from the back of his nose/throat?

Is it worth taking him to GP's? All they ever seem to do is say give him calpol and watch his temp. (he suffers with febrile convulsions).

TIA

Personally, I would take him to the GP's Its probably connected to his cold, but I think I'd want confirmation of that from the doctor.

I do know that for a persistance nose bleed i.e. running constantly, you should try to stop the bleed 3 times, before contacting professionals. You obviously can't do that, if its not constant, but worth putting your mind at rest with a gp visit, I think.

Yes, I would take him - to A&E if you can't get to see GP today, or maybe they can advise you over the phone - try NHS Direct on 0845 46 47, they'll advise you straight away if it's about a baby I think - you're not supposed to bleed all the time!

NatalieJane · 05/03/2008 15:28

There is no chance of getting a GP appointment today, would be tomorrow at the very earliest, is it really worth bothering with A&E? Will try NHS Direct, but going off the length of previous phone calls to them, I'll have to do it when DS1 has finished after school club at 4.

Thanks for the advice.

I've rang them, she said if it stays the same to go to GP's tomorrow, if it gets slightly, worse, take him to out of hours GP tonight, and if it starts pouring properly get an ambulance quickly.

How am I going to know if it starts pouring in the night?

Just go to out of hours gp and have him seen by someone don't rely on over the phone consultation. That way you won't need to worry about it getting worse while you're asleep.

LadyOfWaffle · 05/03/2008 16:56

IMO go to A & E.

Saturn74 · 05/03/2008 16:59

I think you need to get him seen by a doctor today, NJ.
I hope he's better soon.

NatalieJane · 05/03/2008 17:02

Thing is, it gets difficult.

We have no one what so ever to look after DS1, I don't drive, the A&E and out of hours GP are in the next town (15 minutes drive away) and to top it all off DH is going to be very late home tonight, he could start coming home now but it will take him anything up to 5 hours, maybe more depending on traffic.

So my only option realistically is wait and hope it doesn't get worse, and if it does, get an ambulance (unless DH is back by then). I really don't like the idea of an ambulance for a nose bleed, but NHS direct nurse said you can't tell a one year old to keep his head and not to swallow the blood so an ambulance it has to be.

God, I so want a glass of wine.....!

Sorry, keep his head down....

ring your out of hours number, say you are worried etc. and you cannot get out and they should come round. They offered to come out to me even though I had DH there to drive just (!) because I had a very bad headache and could hardly move... so they really should come out to you.

NatalieJane · 05/03/2008 17:11

No they won't send anyone out to us. DS1 had a bit of an emergency about 2 o'clock in the morning a couple of years ago, with no forwarning, DH and I had both had a drink in the evening, we rang out of hours to ask if they'd send someone out, and were told if we were in charge of kids we had to be able to get the kids to them, DH told them we would ring an ambulance then and they said go ahead!

Oh well, nothing can be done for now, I am going to get their dinners out of the way, and then sit and wait I suppose!

Thanks everyone, will let you know how it turns out

Taxi?

NatalieJane · 05/03/2008 18:10

No taxi because of the carseats.

It is starting to slow down now, haven't wiped it away for about 10 minutes and there is nothing there at the moment (was having to wipe it every 5 minutes before) Just keeping fingers crossed that it does stop (so we can take him to GP tomorrow) or that it certainly doesn't get any worse, at least not till DH is home! LOL

Why do these things always happen when DH is so far away?!
