Buttock/ lower back pain?

Hello all,

I’m 43 and for a few months now I’ve been experiencing persistent back pain. I’ve been told it’s my sacroiliac, however, I’m not 100% that it is, due to the fact I’ve had sacroiliac pain before and it’s been an ache more than anything.

This feels like a series of very tender spots in a triangular formation, that run from the base (right side) of my back, through the buttock and to the hip. The pain is more like a nagging, pinching, sharp pain. It’s travels about and makes me feel sick. I’ve added a picture of those tender points, although I placed the hip pain a little low compared to where it is.

Sometimes I get an aching ankle and pain across the front of the knee, so I’ve wondered if it could be sciatica, but there again, most of the time the pain in confined to that triangle area.

I am really struggling to describe this pain and it’s not improved at all, or gotten worse to be fair, for about 8 weeks. It’s difficult to sleep on that side and my hip has become very stiff and clicky.

Just wondering if anyone recognises this and can suggest something that I might be wise to get investigated. Volterol Gel or Naproxen have not worked.

Thank you in advance!

Could it be piriformis syndrome? Painkillers, ibuprofen and physio should probably help x

Hi, yes I have looked into this. I do some (YouTube) physio for Piriformis Syndrome, but the pain feels very pinpointed and a little high? Almost as if it travels across along the ilium bone. Painkillers don’t tend to help but stretching does emphasis the pain…but it strangely feels good.

Hi! I have the pain in this exact area, Iv seen physio, chiro and Osteo everyone has given me different answers to what is could be. Currently seeing a sports therapist who uses some special machines for inflammation, not much improvement but will give it another week or 2.

the piriformis stretch does feel good when I do it but it’s not reliving anything.

how you getting on?

Mine is similar and no answers yet or solutions.

Even taken up Pilates to strengthen my core and so on.

Told its mainly my spine lacking in movement the whole way along it.

Sounds a bit like my Sciatic pain, which as others have intimated, is similar to piriformis, so you can't rule out either. I have also had SI, and I don't think you are experiencing that at present.
