Why do I feel like I'm having a stroke when I laugh?

when I laugh I go really weird… my face drops and I feel like I can’t see properly. I also loose control if I was standing up my legs will collapse or if I was holding something I would drop it.

I’ve dropped knifes and forks before while out for dinner, but the other day it got really scary when I was holding my newborn baby and my friend made me laugh and I nearly dropped him (even though I was sitting down). They had to take the baby off me. They said I looked like I was having a stroke and my face drooped.

Again it got serious when I was driving and the same thing happened.

I can’t explain the feeling but my brain feels like it’s tingling. This has been on going for about 6 years now and I also remember the first ever time it happened.

No one takes me serious about it and I don’t know whether the doctor is going to be able to tell me a diagnoses for this.

Just thought I'd mention also have sleep paralysis (not all the time) but more than the average person.

I also can fall asleep within seconds. But struggle to stay asleep.

Does anyone experience this? I feel no one understands.

Thanks.

No experience but go to a doctor. I had completely different weird symptoms that I ignored for too long and I really wish I'd just gone to the GP, no matter how silly I sounded.

I would make a routine appointment to speak to a doctor about this. It sounds potentially serious.

I clicked on the thread because one of my symptoms was sort of choking whenever I laughed. Turns out I have a huge tumour in my chest which had been left to grow for several years. I'm sure yours is nothing as serious. But it really can't do any harm to talk to a doctor.

Cowlover89 · 24/09/2023 22:00

Definitely get checked out

YukoandHiro · 24/09/2023 22:01

You have to go to the doctor about this.

limey234 · 24/09/2023 22:03

Sounds like cataplexy

limey234 · 24/09/2023 22:03

You gotta go get checked out with dr

limey234 · 24/09/2023 22:08

Look up narcolepsy too. Cataplexy is associated with that. And sleep paralysis.

Pollywoddles · 24/09/2023 22:14

Another vote for Cataplexy. Please see a doctor.

Jifmicroliquid · 24/09/2023 22:20

Sounds like cataplexy.

Kazplus2 · 24/09/2023 22:20

Definitely narcolepsy and Cataplexy. Ask your doctor for referral to a sleep clinic.

BonjourCrisette · 24/09/2023 22:23

Came here to say cataplexy too. My aunt has it (and narcolepsy). You need to go to the doctor. It's not dangerous and my aunt now controls hers with medication.

ArseMenagerie · 24/09/2023 22:31

Yup cataplexy

hannahlx · 25/09/2023 00:32

Thanks everyone. Will be booking a GP appt tomorrow.

I thought about cataplexy and narcolepsy previously... was wondering how I would go about getting a diagnoses?

Get someone to video it if you can. Then show the doctor

BonjourCrisette · 25/09/2023 12:11

GP is where you start. They will be able to refer you to a specialist clinic if necessary.

Kazplus2 · 25/09/2023 15:57

You will likely be required to attend a sleep clinic overnight. They would also first give you a wrist monitor to wear for a period of time to monitor your heart rate..

LittleBoxesOnAHillside · 06/10/2023 12:49

And please consider not driving until you know what this is. Good luck.
