Has anyone had blood in urine and it turned out ok?

I've had fresh blood in my urine for nearly 2 weeks - on and off, not every time. Initially signs of UTI too - usual symptoms so GP had given me a weeks worth of antibiotics.

Antibiotics finish today and most UTI symptoms have gone. The bleeding stopped for a few days but has started up again. I've got to go back to the GP on Monday (she told me to come back if the symptoms don't go away) so I guess it'll be further tests and referrals.

I had gynae cancer and a lot of radiotherapy 9 years ago so this is all really triggering for me (that started with random spotting and no other symptoms) and my sensible brain knows my bladder will have radiation damage and it may just be that. I'm 45 and treatment put me in menopause which I take HRT for.

Just wondering if anyone has any reassuring stories to get me through the weekend.....I'm shocked at how badly I'm coping with this (whatever this is!) as I thought I was doing ok so far on in time.

Yes, me! Though to be fair, it was only found on dipstick testing, both by me and GP at different times. ( So not, 'frank' ie, obvious, evident blood in urine.)
I had bloods/ scans, everything. Nothing was found.
Funnily enough, just when you might expect to find blood in urine or on dipstick, it disappeared completely about 2 years into menopause. ( And, just for the record, it was not menstrual blood...)
Is yours obvious, OP , or just on testing?

Oh, sorry, read and ran without reading whole post.

I wonder whether you've got a bit of interstitial bladder disease?
It's benign but can lead to UTI symptoms. It could be worth mentioning as it's not always something GPs think about first, that said, all other investigations should be carried out normally first.
Thoughts and wishes.

At times it very obvious blood, varying quantities. But days of nothing and sometimes a tiny streak!

I had this but only on dipstick testing. 2 courses of antibiotics and it was still there so I was referred to urology. I had 2 flexible cystoscopies and then a biopsy under anaesthetic and I have red patches on my bladder - interstitial cystitis, which was explained as inflammation but not infection. No further follow up required. Please try not to worry (hard I know).

theduchessofspork · 23/09/2023 21:52

It’s very understandable you’d worry, but the chances are it’s a persistent UTI or inflammation.

TreeHuggerMum1 · 23/09/2023 21:55

Yes! Always! I have something called LPHS (loin pain hemutaria syndrome). I get ‘flank pain’ and blood in my urine.

LindorDoubleChoc · 23/09/2023 22:00

Yes, in all my urine tests throughout 2 pregnancies 2001 and 2003. Had x-rays and bladder scan after birth of second child. Am still here (20 years on) don't know if there's still blood as I haven't had a urine test since. Am now and always have been symptom-free.

Thanks all. I'm really struggling with it all actually. This is the first 'thing' since I was discharged from check ups and (obviously might have nothing to do with the treatment) but if it is to do with the treatment, it's opened a door I'm really struggling with. Seeing fresh blood where it's not supposed to be has really shaken me and I've been quite tearful this evening.

I had this and it was kidney stones. Easily treated with a laser treatment. Given your history I can understand why you are panicking but it could be something like this.

ActuallyYes · 24/09/2023 08:34

I had an episode of frank haematuria several years ago. Urine test showed no signs of infection so I should have been put on 2 week referral as I was 50. However, I saw a locum who didn't follow protocol.

A year later I had another episode and my GP referred me for cystoscopy and kidney scan. No cause found.

Few years later I had another episode. Went privately this time as had insurance. Consultant told me me that bladder cancer is very rare in women, the majority of sufferers are elderly men.

OP - I can understand why you are so worried about this so please insist that your GP refers you.

Also, contact Jo's Trust as they will have experience of complications of cervical cancer treatment.

Best of luck.

Yes, I did. Had a cystoscopy that was completely clear and the doctor said 70% of people with blood in urine are fine.

(Mine was detected in urine sample, I've never noticed any)

Good luck

Thank you, this has really helped. My GP is a good one and is very hot on doing the right thing given my history so already said there will be blood tests / referral to urology etc if it doesn't respond to antibiotics / UTI treatment. I just need to wait until I can see her. I actually thought at the end of the week that it was just an infection and all was good but Sod's Law I'm in a mess over the weekend and have to wait to talk to someone.

Yes have peed bright red before (agony) and now I am fine.

LittleBoxesOnAHillside · 06/10/2023 12:55

Just wanted to add, for anyone reading in the future - me!

It was 10 years ago, I had bright pink and then browny/red urine over the space of a month. No infection found, and apart from slight irritation, no other symptoms. I was so frightened as the internet claimed there were NO positive outcomes to this.
Well there are.
I was tested repeatedly and it resolved itself.

I had experienced norovirus 2 months prior and was going through terrible stress with my mum. I have no idea if either of these contributed to it but my IBS was worse from then on.
I was also still having periods, but it didn't seem possible to connect them.

I am fine now and never had this again. It does comes as a terrible shock though when you google it. Try not to do that. I once googled 'one large tonsil' and it told me this was definitely only ever cancer, but it wasn't even an infection, just irritation from nasal drip Shock

Op did you ever get any answers? I’m having something similar and also worried

S22 · 18/11/2024 14:01
