dd 7mths has had discharge from r ear for 10 days.Swimming underwater day before. Saw practice nurse on day 1 and could see discharge in ear. Had been running out hence gp appt.

Amoxyl given for 5 days then seen at A&E (long story) and very slight redness.

Weare now in Australia on holiday, and still oozing intermittantly. Yellow milky in appearance, not offensive smelling. No symptoms of ear infection and never has been, no temp.
I amd an A&E nurse and I am stuck as to what it is.

Sorry bout sp . Phone rang . Most important is try to keep ear holes dry !!
Baths instead of showers etc .
antibiotic drops May be available in OZ OTC .
Not a serious condition ...so dont worry

Hello- friendly GP here!

Sounds a lot like otitis externa (outer ear infection).

If it doesn't settle with conservative treatment, then oral antibiotics (flucloxacillin) and steroid/antibiotic ear drops (gentisone).

Don't poke anything down ears and take care not to get water in them, so no swimming.

Thank you all very much. She is not unwell at all with it so will do as told. Thanks. Will enjoy the rest of our holiday with no swimming.

yes agree with emma (hello!), classic for otitis externa. most clear up with drops.
absolutely no swimming or cotton buds, or dunking head underwater in the bath

usually clears up with drops rather than orals - gentisone as suggested or sofradex or ofloxacin (but the aussie docs will know)
