Restless Leg Syndrome

DChesh34 · 21/09/2023 10:08

Hello! Found I got this quite bad during pregnancy. Mainly in legs but sometimes I’d get an insatiable urge to just move because of a weird feeling all over.
It stills occurs sometimes and is awfully annoying. I’m 12 weeks pp.
Anyone else experience this? If so, any tips on getting rid of it?
I’m getting back into exercise slowly so fingers crossed this helps?
Thanks!

Magnesium tablets fixed mine, and I get fewer headaches since I started them too.

DChesh34 · 21/09/2023 10:14

Ooh ok thank you!!

Magnesium spray from Better You, available in Superdrug etc. Plus get your ferritin checked if it hasn't been recently. Low ferritin can cause RLS.

TibetanTerrah · 21/09/2023 10:19

Strange tip but try going for a wee, even if you think you don't need one. No idea why as I never see it suggested but it always works for me! Often pee a teeny tiny amount and then the twitch/urge to move just disappears!

StinkyWizzleteets · 21/09/2023 10:21

Masturbate. Orgasms are good albeit temporary relief from rls.

All great tips thank you - especially @StinkyWizzleteets’s haha!

@BluebellsForest funny you say - had my 8 week check recently (three weeks late!!) and blood tests have come back with low ferritin so iron tablets for me for 3 months! Will certainly look into magnesium as well!

thanks all!

Magnesium Spray is the absolute best!

LivingOnAPear · 21/09/2023 20:59

Taking iron works for me. I forget to take it regularly but take it when I get rls and it’s gone within the hour.
I’ve had it since childhood so tried all the things.

Nospringchix · 21/09/2023 21:47

I also have rls, I understand how miserable it can be! It's good that they've tested your ferritin, it's the first port of call as far as medical treatment goes. According to my specialist your ferritin needs to be higher than what the NHS classes as ' normal' . I think she said it needs to be over 100 to get relief of rls. About half of patients get relief from this alone, but if you don't there are other medical treatments, so don't worry.
Try to take the iron tablets with something that contains vitamin C, it helps you absorb the iron better. Tea and coffee reduce absorption so try to avoid these for an hour or two before and after taking the iron.

I using magnesium spray on my legs every night and it has saved my sleep and sanity 🙏🏻 I had a PPH after c section and maternity services weren't overly interested that 5 days later I had such severe restless legs that I couldn't even sleep when baby was sleeping. They grudgingly agreed to 2 iron transfusions and while it went away, it did come back several months later. My GP surgery checked my iron levels and just said "normal", so I've had to treat it myself. I tried taking 1 or 2 paracetamol every night which did work, but isn't really a long term solution. I read about magnesium spray after googling etc and thank goodness I did 🙏🏻

DChesh34 · 21/09/2023 22:21

Thanks for everyone’s takes on it.
I feel for those who have had it long term or suffer a lot with it because it’s the worst thing! Think I’d rather be in proper pain!

Fingers crossed the iron and magnesium help!

My diet makes a big difference, especially what I have for dinner. If I have any dessert other than yoghurt and fruit, even if it's just a biscuit or an individual wrapped cake, I'm screwed! My weighted blanket helps too, and drinking lots of water.

Riverlee · 21/09/2023 22:32

I find I have periods when I get it, and then I don’t get it for ages (periods as in time, not menstruation).

Sometimes I can be eating, and a glass of red wine or chocolate can trigger it and the feeling I get is Instant, but other times I’m fine. If I have it downstairs, just going upstairs to bed can stop it, it’s as if the cycle is broken. If I’m in the car, I do gentle leg movements to dissipate the feeling. Sometimes sticking my leg out of the bed can help.

I never knew about the magnesium.

Hotfeetcoldfeet · 21/09/2023 22:32

I get up in the night and do some stretches when RLS comes on. It’s so horrible. Stretching works for me but I’ll look into magnesium spray too

LookingForPurpose · 21/09/2023 22:41

I swear by a percussion manager for my calves, 5-10 minutes of deep tissue massage before bed and it seems to discharge the electric ants feeling for a few hours to give me chance to get to sleep

RufustheFactualReindeer · 21/09/2023 22:45

Running a cold shower over my feet works for me
