Vomiting after coughing.....anyone had exprience of this?

Hi everyone,

just after a bit of advice and reassurance. DD (11mo) had had a continual cold for weks, developed a cough a week ago and now for the past few days vomits everything she eats/drinks BUT only after a coughing fit

When should I begin to worry, is this normal?

She's had bronchiolitis before and her cough isn't as bad as that. She's not overly snotty so that isn't the cause of her vomiting.

She's not got a fever but is very whiny and listless.

Please help, even if it is just to say the same thing is happening to you

Sorry to hear, this happens with Ds1 every time he has a cough...he coughs and coughs and then throws up.

He's nearly five now and still does it.

He does have mild asthma though, and I recently found out that this can cause the throwing up after coughing. Might be worth asking your GP to check.

Try not to worry.

dd still does this occasionally(she's 6 and maybe not for over a year , fingers crossed) - she had reflux as a baby. In fact I had similar a few weeks back and had a chest infection so maybe worth a trip to gp if it is unusual.

callmeovercautious · 04/03/2008 18:05

Yes, both of us do it

Elibean · 04/03/2008 18:17

Yep, same thing happens to dd. She has/had fairly bad reflux, which probably hasn't helped - throws up more easily!

theUrbanDryad · 04/03/2008 18:19

i had a thread a couple of weeks ago, will see if i can find a link

belair · 04/03/2008 18:19

yes my older dd is like this too. She had mild reflux as a baby and threw up for 11 months.

I've done it twice too, both times in restaurants!

Piffle · 04/03/2008 18:21

Dd has always done this. She is 5 now and still does it. A lot. Her gag reflex is second to none

Mum1369 · 04/03/2008 18:22

My DS1 does it quite a lot too, more when he is poorly. Apparently he has a fairly 'effective gag reflex' - which I guess does what it suggests !! No-one has mentioned it as being problematic.
Coughing in particular is usually followed by vomit.
I guess (if it isn't anything) you just need to be sure she is getting enough fluids in and not getting dehydrated.

luvaduck · 04/03/2008 18:33

how is she otherwise?
you say she is listless - is she eating/drinking??? alert? normal no wet nappies? is she breathign at a normal rate - not too fast

if any no to any of above should get her checked out tonight to rule out a pneumonia/chest infection

one thing it could be is whooping cough - even if she has had the jab, its not a serious illness if you've had the jab but casues coughing fits followed by whooping or vomiting, and can last for ages. she would be quite well in between attacks.

however sounds like she need to be assessed in real life if you are worried she is listless

Marne · 04/03/2008 18:36

Dd does this (so do i) but if it goes on for too long then i would take her to the GP.

bellavita · 04/03/2008 18:49

DS1 did this quite a lot when he was younger (he is now nearly 11). They do grow out of it.

tribpot · 04/03/2008 18:56

My ds does it too - and also had reflux as a baby, interesting. He's 2.[err counts]9.

IorekByrnison · 04/03/2008 19:20

Yes dd (2.5) does this at some point almost every time she has a bad cold with a cough.

pinkpeanut · 04/03/2008 19:22

Thanks so much for your replies, and so quickly too.

She wants to eat and drink but keeps vomiting. She's just very weak and tired.

I will take her to the gp tomorrow for sure

here is my thread, it's a bit of an epic. sorry for the delay, have been bathing ds and making tea!

luvaduck · 04/03/2008 21:18

normal number of wet nappies?
have a look at her chest with her clothes off if shes sucking her chest in so you can see her ribs with each breath she needs to be seen tonight. or is she's breathing much faster than usual.

might be worth giving NHS direct a call to chat it over with them

hope she gets better soon
