Red swollen tonsills, covered in pus, high temps.

DS2 (2.11) has had a high temp since yesterday teatime, off food since Sunday am, diarrhoea since then too. Managed to persuade him to let me look in his throat this evening, after trying to do so all afternoon and his tonsills are up and one of them is covered in pus. Rang for an appt tomorrow morning but maneged to get one straight away. Ttook him in, GP (Locum) very offhand, looked in his throat and said he couldn't see any pus, probably viral and begrudgingly gave me a script for anti-B's to cash in in 48hrs if he deteriorated....as I was "obvioulsy very anxious"
I double checked when I left the surgery and there's def pus on his swollen, red tonsills.
So, I've cashed in the script.
Anyone medical - shall I go ahead and just give it to him, or is there a chance that it's viral?
What would you do?
ps - should also add he and his brother both had tonsillitis over Christmas so I recognise the signs.

I would probably give the prescription. Presumably the doctor wouldn't have prescribed it if he thought it wasn't necessary.

Bit of a cop out though for the doctor to tell you to decide

He clearly didn't think there was a need as he couldn't see the pus, but it's def def there.
His whole manner was appaling, and I'm not just doctor bashing, dh is one (although in hospitals), so I'm only too aware of how much stick they come in for, but equally I know what a diference the correct aattitude makes.

My DS1 has tonsillitis not long ago - sounds exactly like it.
I would get the antibiotics into him sooner rather than later.
Not medical, but that's what I would do.
GP sounds like a right lump.

Yes get the anti biotics in quick. Sounds EXACTLY like tonsillitis. Give lots of painkillers alternating calpol and ibruprofen every three hours if necessary. Poor little thing it's really horrid. What a chump the doc sounds

Oh the poor child - as a tonsillitis sufferer, my advice is to definitely get those anti-biotics into him. The sooner they have a chance to get into his system, the better. It will take a couple of days to see any effects though but soft foods 'til then will help.
