Any experience of paediatric codeine?

dd, who has had awful barking cough for oh, last 3 months, has just been put on a course of this.
it's a long story -- everyone was proceeding on assumption that she was asthmatic, and upping her meds, with no real effect. recently she has had 2 short courses of prednisolone which did cut the cough. however, consultant has just taken a look at her and said maybe the cough is not strictly asthma-related, advised us to cut down on her inhaler use, and put her on a 6-wk course of paed. codeine which is a cough suppressant as well as a painkiller.
shazaam, the cough has gone. we're going back to see consultant at the end of jan. however, a 6-wk course seems really extreme, not least because dd, always a lively sort, appears to be even more animated on the codeine (we were told this might happen, just as it might make her drowsy).
has anyone else got any codeine experiences?

Sorry no codeine experiences but I would say to continue for now as it might be one of those things where you need to carry on with treatment for a while after the symptoms have gone for it to work fully. In the mean time could you contact the consultant (perhaps phone the secretary and leave a message) or ask your GP. Tell them the cough has gone and ask if codeine still needs to be given anyway.

Hi, can't really add anything useful, but bumping for you. I read the thread because my son had paediatric codeine for pain relief (alternated with paracetamol) when he was in hospital as a tiny baby, but it was nothing to do with cough suppression.
Hope someone can help!

thanks for bumping!
anxious partly because codeine sounds a bit epic (i associate it with morphine and general loucheness). but then at least we've cut the inhalers back. she was on a right old cocktail until recently.
good advice, singsong.

constipation
use prune juice as antidote if you get given codeine
I was on codeine for asthma and bad coughs as an older child too... it did help and I never went on it again but heck I remember the constipation more than the cough.
Hope your dd stays ok
