We have waited for too long to get a diagnosis for him, so I am really praying that they will be able to see what is causing him so much pain & then give me a plan of action.

He is booked to have a General Anaesthetic but hoping to get away with heavy sedation as he will be too uncomfortable to lie still for 30 minutes.

We get the results on Thursday so at least no long drawn out wait.

I'm really glad his finally getting the scan as I remember your other threads and know this has been going on for rather along time.

I had an MRI scan on my lower back 2 years ago which kick started my treatment plan, I still have the problem but my pain is now minimal and something I can live with.

Fingers crossed that tomorrow brings the answers that you need and is the beginning of your son's recovery.

Good luck and Best Wishes.

Well, he ended up with heavy sedation - had the same effect as a GA! The scan took about an hour (I stayed in the room) and then he was taken to the Children's ward to recover.

The Anaesthetist said DS should NOT be taking Diazepam - it is "old fashioned" treatment for muscle spasm. Didn't give us an alternative though.

Results tomorrow...

I'm glad your sons finally had the scan, it took longer than mine. I would have needed sedation for that amount of time.

I have depression as well and take amitriptyline which works as a muscle relaxant as well as an anti-depressant but its an older type one so I shouldn't think it would be prescribed for children.

Good luck and fingers crossed for the results tomorrow.

Just to add to the good luck wishes for the results tomorrow - and well done to your DS for coping with the MRI etc. - not a pleasant experience at any age let alone a child!

jalopy · 06/03/2008 14:57

How did it go, Milli?

Milliways · 06/03/2008 17:23

Well, we the scan showed nothing!

This IS good news in nothing nasty lurking, but also disappointing that there is no obvious cause. It doesn't just stop hurting when they say there is no reason it should be hurting, but good to know he won't make things worse by trying to get on with things.

Anyway, we are taking him off Diazepam (a depressant!) which may make him feel better as his head clears, and he starts Hydrotherapy on Tuesday with the hospital Physios. Hopefully, some muscle strengthening etc should help to stabilise the whole area. I also have the option of continuing at the Osteopath if he feels the need for a de-knotting time, but we will see what the Physios say/do first.

I hope it doesn't take too long to show improvement as DS is exhausted with it all.

Milliways Hi, I've been waiting for you to post.

As you said on the one hand it's brilliant news that the scan came back clear (mine didn't I've got 2 prolapsed discs) but on the other hand it must be very frustrating not to have a definite diagnosis as you son is obviously in a considerable amount of pain and limited in what he can do. As a mother it mut be hard to see your child suffering and not know what to do for the best.

IMO pain is one of the hardest things to describe and as you said the scan being clear doesn't suddenly take the pain away or solve the problem. I'm guessing the problem is muscular rather than mechanical. At least you now have a way forward with the physio and knowing it shouldn't make the problem worse. Personally I think its a good idea to go into the physio with a clear head and not have the pain masked by the Diazepam. I take a lot of medication and live with that fuzzy head feeling, often it feels like everywhere is hurting.

Pain can be so exhausting both physically and mentally so I hope your son really benefits from the physio and is soon on the road to recovery.

Please keep us up dated with his progress when you can, will be thinking of you.

Good Luck and Best Wishes.
