Red Eye (With Picture!)

Would anybody know what's up with my eye? It's been sore for a few hours so I went to take my lens out and noticed it was very red. It's only a bit of one eye, I assume blood vessel but I wanted to check as it's a bit painful and I didn't think burst blood vessels hurt at all... TIA!

If it hurts I would leave your lens out and get it checked out, I’d also get your BP checked, most pharmacies can do this for you rather than booking (or waiting for) a GP appointment

Viral conjunctivitis? Often starts with one eye red and a bit sore, then that eye gets really weepy and painful, then it spreads to the other eye. I'd keep your lenses out for a day or two and see how it develops.

MakeItToTheMoon · 18/09/2023 18:47

Possibly episcleritis (inflammation) from looking at the photo. Usually resolves itself and you can use cold compresses/ artificial tears for comfort. Should resolve in 7-10 days. No contact lens wear.

However, you do mention pain so as a contact lens wearer there’s a very small chance of having a contact lens related infection which can be serious, So any signs of pain and light sensitivity get some help ASAP.

If you can get an appointment in the next few days it may be worth having it looked at by by an optometrist.

Burst blood vessels don't usually hurt and it does look quite sore. I could be the start of conjunctivitis, have you had any matter or stickiness in the eye? If so you can get infected eye drops otc now. l would also leave your lenses out for a couple of days too.

Lemonademoney · 18/09/2023 18:47

Possible allergic reaction? Do you have some piriteze?

TomatoSandwiches · 18/09/2023 18:48

Could be all manner of things, with pain and inflammation of the eye it's best to get it checked out ASAP.

COYU · 18/09/2023 18:51

I would try and find someone professional to have a look at that tomorrow OP. Many areas have schemes where local opticians can have a look and refer you directly into eye clinics if needed so try that if you can
Or some hospitals have walk-in acute eye services. Best to get it checked and get something to clear it up

I had an eye test this morning and nothing to worry about, so I would've thought they'd have noticed if it was an infection... I then put some brand new lenses in so I can't see it can be them. The eye test did have to blow several puffs of air into that eye, I can't remember doing anything else that might have annoyed it. It's not exactly painful, just a bit sore. I have had a burst blood vessel before and don't remember feeling anything which is why I'm wondering if this might be something else... I'll go back to the optician in the morning though if it doesn't clear up. Why do these things happen as soon as they close for the evening!

I'll take an antihistamine too - I've got very dry eyes and have been using a lot of drops, I was worried that might be connected but I can't see why it would be only a bit of one eye.

The day after I had the pressure test (puff of air to the eye) I woke up with burst blood vessel in my eye that I had never had before (or since) it was also a tiny bit sore….took about a week to clear completely and I left my lenses out and used dry eye drops as it just felt irritated. I’m wondering if this is what has happened to you…

Ah, that may be it then - for some reason she did about ten puffs as opposed to the normal three in the other eye! I'll double-check with the optician in the morning but it doesn't sound like it's anything too terrifying. Thanks everyone :)

That’s exactly what happened to me! She did the test twice (so 6 puffs) as wasn’t happy with the first time - I had slightly dry eyes anyway so wonder if this just made this more likely to happen. Definitely ask the opticians for their opinion but don’t panic too much!

My husband has had iritis a few times, eyeball goes red and it's painful. It's very important it's treated quickly as your sight can be permanently damaged. Can you get to an eye hospital? Western eye hospital or Moorfields if London or nearby

Don't bother with 111 last time he had it they were clueless.

It doesn't seem to be in the iris, and it's a lot less sore now I've taken my lens out - and what ache there is is in the corner of the eye where the redness is. I will make sure I check it out tomorrow but I don't think it sounds like iritis 🤞. Thank you though.

Just checking in to see how your eye is today and if you spoke to your opticians…I’m still convinced we had the same thing happen!

Sorry, didn't see this - I didn't go Tuesday as wasn't feeling great and it was pissing with rain, it didn't hurt though it was still red. Have seen optician now and he thinks it was just my lens being too dry as I'm suffering from severe dry eyes... I think he's wrong though as I'd only just put a brand new lens in a couple of hours earlier. But it's less red and not painful now, and my vision isn't affected; I've also had a very runny nose this week so maybe have a virus, or allergies 🤷‍♀️ (I still suspect the aggressive pressure test though!)
