What to feed 15 mth old just getting over tummy bug?

Dd (15 mths) vomited several times on Sunday afternoon and first thing yesterday morning. Since then she has kept down boiled water and diluted milk and nibbled on a bit of bread stick last night.

What are the best foods to try her on that will be gentle on her stomach? Would yoghurt/fruit puree be ok? I would start with toast but she isn't normally that keen on it. What have your dc's been interested in when feeling ill?

Dry Cheerios or similar cereal.
Cheesy mash potato.

thanks - cheesy mash I hadn't thought of but can do easily - good comfort food!

Any other ideas?

i would avoid butter in the mash...

plain veg and fruit i would say.. not yoghourt or dairy

i think that's the last thing one introduces back after d and v

soft rice and well cooked lentils work really well. It is substantial enough to fill her up but doesn't have too much fibre to overload the system (as fruit might do)

my two either just have plain cheese sandwiches, or things like chopped fruit in a dish....they ahve a few fruits, apple, grapes, melon, strawberries etc, and just put it inot a dish and thye can pick and choose which they want to eat.

dd just loves tomato soup with brown rolls. or i do pasta twirls or whatever with a bit of mushroom soup as a sauce and a bit of grated cheese in too and they like that....

Thanks - dd has just had some dry cereal and some fruit puree for breakfast - staying down so far and she has gone back to sleep again - a bit weak and floppy after a day and a half with no food. Hate to see her like this

My ds has had the same twice in three weeks - its taking time to get over it and he is sleeping twice a day instead of just the once - the sick stopped and the diarhoea went on and on and still does with one massive explosion a day - catastrophic ones!... we have been eating everything bland but now vom has stopped for mroe than one day they told us to eat as normal but avoid fatty, he has had yogurt but we have been duluting down any milk.

i have a great book by Yehudi Gordon ('Birth & Beyond') that says a 'BRAT' diet is good: banana, rice, apple, toast (white). this has always helped us.

if she likes soup then take a handful of white rice and simmer it in loads of water so that you make a 'rice soup' once the rice is all soft and mushy. a lot of asian countries do this and i swear by it too (for adults and kids!).

i would also avoid dairy where possible.

good luck.

Have had a mixed couple of days - fruit puree has been the best thing - she was quite keen on that but mashed potato came straight back up She's still not herself - just picking at little bits of food and is only drinking about two thirds of her normal milk intake. Sleeping has gone to pot - was up 3 times last night so I was knackered at school today... nearly the weekend thank goodness! Will try the rice soup - she quite likes risotto normally (haven't tried her with soup yet as she can't manage a spoon yet (tries but food has to be solid enough not to fall off )

if you can't feed it to her on a spoon and she wants to do it herself, you could just make it thicker by simmering it down for longer, or putting in less water to start with.

risotto sounds a great idea (i will try that next time), especially if you can use some chicken stock so you know they are getting some protein at least.

mine love the ella's kitchen organic pouches of fruit puree (love sucking and squeezing them themselves!), especially the apple and banana one which i guess would be good for troubled tummy times too.

good luck with sleep, btw. ds2 is 10 months and has had 3 tummy bugs. by the 3rd night his sleep was also affected, but i was always relieved that it got back on track after a day or 2 of feeling better.

BRAT diet here as well, works wonders
