High Ferritin Levels

I have been told my ferritin levels have gone up to 294. My liver tests are all okay. What else may be causing this?

Daily (or high levels of) alcohol
inflammation
Hemochromatosis
Obesity

Crikeyalmighty · 14/09/2023 20:56

I've got high ferretin levels too although lower than yours (around 200)

Doctor told me likely to be a combination in my case of post menopause, no periods for 25 years (mirena)
Overweight

She did sayhaemochromatosis levels are usually much higher

The newer blood tests are not through yet so I will update here once I get told what they think it may be.

Hi. I’ve just posted on another board a similar question.
very high ferritin levels. What I know so far is that it indicates inflammation in the body. Can be due to autoimmune conditions.
My DC had covid 14-15 days ago. So trying to ask others here if the levels can be high after covid infection. He also had a bacterial chest infection. He doesn’t have any autoimmune conditions though that we know if so are really worried.

My levels have come down to 234 so the GP is taking bloods again in 3 months time. He does not seem overly bothered by the results.

Does anyone know why obesity could show high ferritin levels?

I have normal iron and normal ferritin but very high absorption and saturation levels of iron. Which is odd.

Myworldjusthim · 20/09/2023 08:08

Did he mention what he thought was the reason for them to be elevated?

Pisces · 20/09/2023 08:20

@Myworldjusthim no he did not. I just received a text message to say it was coming down and to repeat bloods in 3 months time.

Did you have a virus/cold around that time. I am so glad they are coming down for you. Hopefully they will be even lower at your next blood test

Pisces · 20/09/2023 08:57

I have a spinal condition and Fibromyalgia. The bloods were taken because I was of a very low mood, in lots of pain and exhausted. My condition fluctuates and I can have weeks of feeling like this and then maybe two days when I feel "good".

Could be genetic haemochromatosis- that causes elevated levels, and whilst it’s normally higher (500+) as women of childbearing age it can be slightly elevated into the 200s rather than super high as you lose ferritin through periods / preg / breast feeding

DobbyTheHouseElk · 20/09/2023 09:03

Hemachromatosis ? Do you have any Irish heritage? My Dad at 83 discovered he had this condition when having a pre-op. His bloods weren’t right. Took a private consultant to work out why.

Both his parents must have has the condition and I am assumed to either carry or have the condition. We aren’t from Ireland but have a small amount of Irish heritage.

Hi @Myworldjusthim I've just seen ur post about high iron levels after covid.
I have just recently had covid myself.
Had bloods done yesterday and my doctor has just messaged me saying my iron levels are high and to book in for another blood test.
I'm wondering if you found out if your DC levels were a result of the virus.
