I had my cholesterol levels tested recently as have had elevated levels in the past. I got this back from the GP to say that they are mildly elevated, and to re-rest in a year. Can someone please tell me how these compare to normal cholesterol.

TIA

! Serum cholesterol 7

Serum triglycerides 1.6mmol/L

Serum HDL cholesterol level 1.8 mmol/L

Serum LDL cholesterol level 4.5 mmol/L

Se non HDL cholesterol level 5.2 mmol/L

Serum cholesterol/HDL ratio 3.9

Hi, I can't be much help, but here are mine for a comparison . Been told the same to do lifestyle changes and retest fasting in a years time. I ate 25 mins before the test so not sure thats why mine are high. Mine don't show a Serum LDL cholesterol level but show a calculated LDL Chol level.

My results show the levels next to each that we should have, does your report show that?

Serum cholesterol 5.8

Serum triglycerides 1.4mmol/L

Serum HDL cholesterol level 1.43 mmol/L

Calculated LDL Chol level 3.73 mmol/L

Se non HDL cholesterol level 4.37mmol/L

Serum cholesterol/HDL ratio 4.06

Thanks for that - no, I don't have the expected levels - I have googled it, but trying to work out which is the overall figure (and how much it should be and come down!). don't want to ask the GP (I can always ask the next time I am in) but was hoping that someone who did the knew the tests could let me know!

The report seemed to say slightly elevated? And then a link to the med diet!

As a general guide, total cholesterol should be 5 or less. A higher HDL is usually good and higher LDL is usually not so good. None of this is particularly significant on its own. Cholesterol is ONE of a number of measurements that GPs use to calculate your risk of having a cardiovascular event (heart attack, stroke) over the next 10 years. So it depends on your age, sex, family history, blood pressure, weight, blood sugar etc. You can address mildly raised cholesterol with diet, exercise, plant sterols etc and if all your other markers are OK there is nothing to worry about. If you have other things going on then it might be of more concern.

thanks @sorrynotathome that is useful to hear that only if its multiple things then it's a concern.

I have the full figures in my report I can post here for you @iwantavuvezela .

Do you have the link to the med diet, please could you post here, I have no clue what to eat and what not to eat Thanks

Your total cholestrol is 7.

healtywealthy · 15/09/2023 16:43

thanks @iwantavuvezela .

I'm also looking for some good links for simple healthy foods, if anyone has any to share please let me know thanks :-)

here are the guide figures for the correct levels, so if we look at my results this is where they should be:

Serum cholesterol 5.8 less than 5

Serum triglycerides 1.4mmol/L 0.0 - 1.7

Serum HDL cholesterol level 1.43 mmol/L greater than 1.20

Calculated LDL Chol level 3.73 mmol/L less than 3.30

Se non HDL cholesterol level 4.37mmol/L less than 7.50

Serum cholesterol/HDL ratio 4.06 less than 5.00
