Itchy nose! Driving me mad!

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 11/09/2023 17:06

The outside of my nose has been incredibly itchy for a few months. Not the inside. Around the end/tip of my nose and the outside of my nostrils. Nowhere else on my face. I'm also 'aware' of it - whilst not exactly sore, it's just constantly low level irritated.

Also, and this may just be my perception, I THINK the tip is slightly bigger. I just notice it more when I look in the mirror. Am horrifiying myself by imagining it's the start of 'drinkers nose' (I don't drink).

I've looked online but there's nothing at all 'itchy nose' just brings up stuff about allergies and it's most definitely the outside skin that's itching.

I've tried cortisone cream but that makes no difference. Am attempting to make a GP appointment but that may take some time...

Anyone have any ideas what t his might be and have you had it yourself?

Have you tried an antihistamine just in case it is allergies?

Alloveragain3 · 11/09/2023 19:51

Ooh I get this sometimes and it drives me mad. No allergies / hay fever as far as I know.

Thankfully it never lasts more than about 30 mins but its horrible.

Chestnutz · 11/09/2023 20:20

No real answers but as a pp suggested I’d try an antihistamine.

Plonkydonkey · 11/09/2023 20:46

Could you possibly have a super fine hair that is waving around in the breeze? I found one after what felt like days of trying to work out why I was itchy. Get a really good mirror.

Moodwill · 11/09/2023 20:49

I get periods of this and it drives me bananas. I take an antihistamine and smother my noise in anti allergy cream. Helps a bit.f

This is what ChatGPT 4 says just in case helpful...

I'm sorry to hear about the discomfort and concern you're experiencing. I'm not a doctor, but a few conditions might explain the symptoms you've described:

  1. *Seborrheic Dermatitis*: This is a skin condition that causes flaky, scaly, red skin and can be itchy. It often affects areas of the body where there are many oil-producing glands, including the sides of the nose.
  1. *Rosacea*: This is a chronic skin condition that can cause redness, swelling, and sometimes a sensation of itching or burning. One subtype of rosacea, known as phymatous rosacea, can cause skin to thicken and enlarge, usually around the nose (often referred to as rhinophyma). It's more common in men and takes years to develop.
  1. *Contact Dermatitis*: This is a type of skin reaction resulting from contact with an allergen or irritant. It could be from a skincare product, soap, or something else you've come into contact with.
  1. *Other Dermatological Conditions*: There are many skin conditions that might cause itching, redness, or swelling. Conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, or other dermatoses could be possibilities.
  1. *Infections*: Some skin infections can cause itchiness and swelling.

If the cortisone cream didn't help, it's essential to see a healthcare provider, preferably a dermatologist, who can evaluate your symptoms more thoroughly. They can provide a diagnosis and suggest appropriate treatments. In the meantime, it's a good idea to avoid scratching the area and to use gentle skincare products that don't further irritate the skin.

"@wheresmymojo - thank you, I think from that list, rosacea is the one that seems to fit best. I do occasionally think it looks a tiny bit discoloured, but I'm so minutely that other people may not notice. Perhaps there's also a tiny 'burning' sensation when it's not itching!

Have requested a GP appointment.

One thing I did try yesterday, in desperation, was anti bacterial wipes - saw a box saying "for surface or skin" and was desperate enough to try. Unless it's coincidence, they seemed to make a difference.

@Plonkydonkey - ooh, I hate that! Yes, that happens to me a lot and any hair on my face makes me itch like mad. With regard to this issue though, its definitely not that cos I tie it up and wear a head band.

@gamerchick - yes, have tried antihistamines just on offchance it was allergies but no luck. Have used the anti itch cream Eurax too.
