Effing worms

FFS, not even got young kids to blame! Anyway, felt the tell tale itch had a look and ugh. Got some Ovex and took it on Thursday, now Monday, itching much less, seeing dead worms in bowel movements but also the odd very much alive ones too....

I was planning to have a second dose 2 weeks later, prefer the belt and braces approach. Anyone taken it earlier than 2 weeks? Is it bad for your liver? Not that I worry when pouring wine down my neck so not sure why I'm worried about Ovex!

Am quite fastidious about hand washing, changing beds weekly, hoovering, showering daily etc so not sure what's gone wrong.

Any advice, take a second dose now? Wait? Ring GP?

Ah worms, we were plagued with them for a while. You can take another dose closer to the first, but the reason for the gap is to catch the newly hatched worms before they become fertile. I'd take a tablet every two weeks until you stop seeing them, while washing bedsheets and towels regularly and wear underwear to bed.

I now worm us all every six weeks (at the same time as the cat Grin) and we haven't had them in ages. Apparently a lot of countries recommend regular worming for everyone.

If you have kids at school, primary or secondary, or if you work with kids, then high chance of worms! I always think we could have eradicated the little blighters, if every child was de-wormed when we went into lockdown. But clearly it wasn't to be😬.

Moodwill · 12/09/2023 14:06

I took 4 tablets when I had them, weekly! And wore knickers in bed every night and showered every morning. Rest of the household seemed not to get them so I have no idea how I did.

CatsOnTheChair · 12/09/2023 14:41

Yeah, you can take ovex more often, but you do need to make sure you take one late enough to catch any eggs that hatch.
So, you could take some after 1 week, and then another dose at the 2 week mark?

Justwingingit2005 · 12/09/2023 14:45

When we had them ( still makes me shudder) I dosed everyone then a week later another dose then a dose a week after that then two weeks after that. Neurotic probably but I wasn't going to risk one of the little so and sos starting it all off again.

I had a nightmare with worms. I also seem to be most affected by the itching compared to the rest of my family which was annoying. My theory though is that I kept reinfecting myself because I do all the laundry. So now, I wash hands before collecting all laundry out of the basket, wash hands immediately after putting it in the machine (and don't touch detergent, knobs etc until hands are washed) and wipe out the laundry bag (I use an ikea bag). Haven't had them since I started doing this.

I took boots own brand ones every week for 4 weeks as I was so fedup

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 12/09/2023 16:01

Quite likely you got them when eating something that another person with worms handled, maybe leaving an egg or two. Or from raw food, dust or other items. They survive 2 weeks outside the body, apparently.

roycroppersshopper · 12/09/2023 16:19

Thanks for the info everyone. Only I seem to have them, not my boyfriend. There is only 2 of us in the house. Took another dose last night and no "live" activity today so hoping that it has done the trick....

Am washing bed linen and undies on hot, ironing it all too, damp dusting and hoovering/mopping. Bloody annoying.

That would have been a fantastic plan. Wasted opportunity

Sorry, late to the thread but have just searched and this was the most recent.
DD (2) has been complaining of “itchy bits” for a couple of weeks and I’ve seen evidence tonight that DD (6) definitely does 😖
Advice please! What is the best anti bac type cleaner that kills the eggs too? And what do I do with all the toys? Is there something I can wash them in? Thinking Lego etc.

Ionapussy · 10/10/2023 21:10

Medication

Clean using a disinfectant

Wash all bedding and soft toys that are regularly played with hot wash (could use dettol laundry detergent)

Make sure DC are wearing pj bottoms and knickers at night (it will help stop eggs spreading around)

I made mine change clothes in the morning in the bathroom and straight in a carrier bag. Wash bums immediately and wash flannels.

Wash hands, a lot! (use a nail brush)

ThreeLeggedKitten · 10/10/2023 21:15

Got rid of mine eating two segments of raw garlic.

SingingWaffleDoggy · 10/10/2023 21:29

@Ionapussy any particular ingredient in the disinfectant? Going to get some medication tomorrow.
@ThreeLeggedKitten I’m keen but don’t think I can convince the kids! Garlic bread might be an option though.
@roycroppersshopper I hope now, 4 weeks down the line, you are sorted?!

Ionapussy · 10/10/2023 21:32

I just used home bargains own brand dettol disinfectant. I don't think you need to use any particular ingredients, just clean regularly. The problem with worms is that they are itchy, kids scratch bums then touch something/put fingers in the mouth, and the whole cycle starts again..... Clean doorknobs, taps, wipe down kitchen and bannisters

MeinKraft · 12/10/2023 01:44

I don't think there's a cleaner that kills eggs, they have to be manually removed by wiping surfaces and hoovering. Throw away any play doh and wash soft toys or bag them up for a few weeks.
