ie. a tooth implanted in a gap?

In middle of it just now - had the actual implant inserted end Jan and now waiting for that to calcify before getting the new tooth.
What do you want to ask?

expatinscotland · 03/03/2008 15:14

my mother has two, molars.

there is a new procedure, now in the UK, expensive but much improved.

uses a laser to guide in the implant and takes only about an hour and then you're good to go.

but my mother had hers in the US, where the procedure orginated, and although it was about $3000/tooth she thinks it is well worth it, especially as bridges were compromising the stability of the molars she has left.

she's planning to have a couple of more molars implanted.

i would love to have them, but they're about £6000/tooth here, last i checked.

gomez · 03/03/2008 15:14

Need to go and pick up from school but will check later if no-one else had been able to help.

expatinscotland · 03/03/2008 15:15

a dentist in Edinburgh does them the new way, but again, it ain't cheap.

gomez · 03/03/2008 15:16

Nah, EPIS £2000 ish for a top front - no laser thingy thou'!

expatinscotland · 03/03/2008 15:18

this was featured in a Sat. edition of Evening News, gomez.

i'll try and chase it up.

but yeah, it was WAY over £2000/tooth because you're basically in and out and good to go.

if i ever had the money to do it, however, i'd go back to the US for it because it's that much cheaper - mainly because more and more folks are doing it so there's competition.

i have two molars out and would LOVE to have implants.

Cam · 03/03/2008 15:19

Thanks expat. My dentist prices are nowhere near that, luckily

But still not cheap

Thanks Gomez, I want to know how long it takes, is it painful etc?

I'm still at the stage of waiting for x-ray to be looked at to see whether or not an implant is even suitable.

OP posts:

Took about 45 minutes in total, including numbing etc. Was more brutal than I had envisged TBH but not too bad. Not that painful really - nothing that a couple of Nurofen couldn't deal with - even the next day. Top lip was swollen and bruised - think Leslie Ash/Pete Burns but only for about 24/48 hours. Mine was done on the Friday and I looked normal ish by the Monday. Couldn't wear denture again thou' until the Wednesday. Stitches out after a week and no real hassle. Now need to eait 3 to 6 month for stage where they re-open gum and attached the 'new' tooth. Nearer 3 months for bottom teeth and nearer 6 for top.

Not traumatic at all really.

expatinscotland · 03/03/2008 15:28

I found it!

It's called 'New Teeth in an Hour Is Worth Smiling About' and it was in the 05/03/2007 but the article doesn't come up, only the comments, so I'm messing it with it now to see if I can't get it up.

Cam · 03/03/2008 15:31

I don't have a denture, just a gap at present (near the back, top) not noticeable to other people.

However the dentist says if I leave it the teeth on either side will move.

Re the procedure itself, I have had 2 wisdom teeth out with only local anesthetic a couple of years ago so imagine its similar.

Can you feel the implant at the moment?

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 03/03/2008 15:31

got it!

hope this works:
teeth

Cam · 03/03/2008 15:41

Thank you expat

As I live about as far away from Edinburgh as you can get in the Britain I am going to have to go the old-fashioned way

And its cheaper

my dh has an implant - he had his front tooth out and an implant put in. took about 8 months from start to finish, looks great, you wouldn't know except for his bank balance which is lighter by 2k! he says the tooth felt weird as it has no sensation but is fine now. Not sure what sensation you get from molars though cam.

jasper · 03/03/2008 16:44

Don't have one but have got a diploma in implantology!

They are absolutely wonderful and as long as the case is well assessed up front the success rate is almost 100%

gomez · 03/03/2008 19:09

Hi Cam - no I can't feel anything, it is under the gum so nothing to see or feel until the next stage. I am struggling with the denture so you are lucky not to need one! They are bloody horrible things - and I have only had it for a few months.

EPIS that look interesting but too late for me - my one tooth has already been done!
