Reflux ?

I was hoping for some advice, I’ve never struggled with indigestion, heartburn, reflux apart from being pregnant 10+ years ago.

About a week ago, I swallowed a large, vitamin capsule, and it didn’t feel like it had gone down properly, for a couple of days, I felt really uncomfortable like there was something stuck in my throat and my stomach was churning and I felt a bit gassy, I went to see the pharmacist who said that it could’ve created a little bit of reflux and take some Gaviscon advance for a few days which I did and it did seem to help a bit though I was still waking up every morning with a feeling of my throat being tight, feeling something in it and every time I swallow, my stomach is bubbling . It’s been over a week now and it just feels so strange that this come out of nowhere with no real improvement, the Gaviscon does help temporarily, but it comes back, I’m wondering if I might have damaged something or scratched it when the capsule wouldn’t go down and this is a after effect, any advice would be appreciated, if it continues into next week, I will speak to the GP who I’m guessing may give me some omoperazole. Literally every time I swallow I can feel my stomach gurgling in response., there is no heartburn all files/acid in my mouth or anything

I’m a reflux sufferer and having the feeling of something stuck is a classic symptom. Gaviscon advance is good but it only offers temporary relief as it makes a raft over the stomach contents.
be careful w omeprazole as if you take it for too long when you come off it you have acid rebound and symptoms get worse. You’ll be ok for a months worth though (it also has nasty side effects if taken long term).

Hiya! I suffer with "normal" reflux. However I have been in a coma twice in 3 years. One for 6 weeks and the one from this year 8 weeks. As a consequence I had to have a tracheostomy each time. I now also suffer from silent reflux ( as diagnosed by my speech and language therapist) I get the "something stuck in my throat feeling". I am on a ppi, famotidine and gaviscon advance at night. You are meant to wait AT least 45 minutes before eating/drinking/swallowing anything that goes to your stomach. IDEALLY gaviscon advance should be the LAST thing you swallow of the night to line your stomach as laying down puts pressure on your stomach and can bring the acid up. Hope this helps xx

Hey,

I suffer from reflux, a hiatus hernia and have Barrett’s from acid changes (pre cancerous changes in the cells in the throat) I Also have a condition called eosinophilic esophagitis where food and medication gets stuck in my throat and I have to use things like coke (anything with fizz) to get them to move and if not then I have to go hospital. .I would be seriously asking a gp to refer you to a gastroenterologist, so you can have endoscopy and 24 acid test to properly evaluate what is going on. My Dad ignored his acid symptoms and he has terminal oesophageal cancer now

Things like wedge pillow at night
No eating after a certain gime
Keep a symptom diary of what you eat
Peppermint tea is good for acid

good luck x

Thanks for the advice. I’ll definitely call the Dr on Monday. I’m very perplexed that it’s come on after one event of swallowing a big well woman capsule!

To update. GP advised a stool sample and bloods, all came back negative. He’s given me omoperazole for a month which has helped but randomly the symptoms appear again often after lunch. Need to see him again in a few weeks if no improvement. Not sure of next steps
