Think DS may have it.

Can I get anything from the pharmacy tomorrow or will I need to take him to docs on Monday ?

It's both eyes.

Just wiping them with a tissue atm. Anything else I can do for him ?

They look sore/itchy. Would salt water sting them ? Just trying to remember if the sea makes eyes sore...

Salt water (made from cool boiled water) with cotton wool. Wipe out the way. Use a seperate one for each eye.

My 2 have just got over this. I got drops from the chemist too, though getting them in ds's eyes was a nightmare!!

Think you can use salt water, but I just used cooled boiled water. Think the pharmacist can now give out chloramphenicol drops without prescription. HTH

how old? DS just had it, NHS direct said under 2s need a prescription, so we took him to the docs. Dr wouldn't give anything, said they don't give anything these days. Had to take him back a few days later (cold, chest etc.) and saw different GP who gave prescription straight away, - he said he would have given the drops earlier if he'd seen him.

breastmilk is good for it, if you are breastfeeding.

Weak chamomile tea (cooled, of course!) Clean piece of cotton wool for each sweep of the eye.

Gently and very carefully massage just under tear duct.

Scrupulous hygene of hands, face cloths, towels etc.

HTH

My 15mo has had repeated bouts of this in the last 4 weeks, co-inciding with a cold (don't know if the two are linked). But each time it's only been a very minor.

NHS direct say only use cool boiled water and cotton wool, NOT water with salt in it.

Chloramphenicol (sp?) is the medication of choice, but my doc said the pharmacist wouldn't give it without a prescription below the age of 2. He prescribed it each time to DS (unlike last year when he said hust to use water) but it doesn't seem to be doing much good.

jaz2 · 01/03/2008 19:53

Where is the tear duct (sorry, I'm so ignorant)?

foxythesnowman · 01/03/2008 19:56

Its the inner corner of the eye, closest to the nose. Gently with your (clean) little finger with very little pressure move it just underneath in a circular motion. Might help clear the gunk a wee bit, but you do have to be very gentle.

jaz2 · 01/03/2008 20:00

OK, thanks. I'll try your suggestions.

Thanks guys.

Your can buy chloramphenicol (optrex infected eyes) over the counter, we got it just last week for my DDs.

not following you theodoresmummy btw

TheodoresMummy · 01/03/2008 23:39

Ta twocutedarlings.

Do you think I could take him swimming in the morning if he feels ok ?

He will kick off if we don't follow our routine, but does it spread through water ?
