Dental IV sedation

Markb1980 · 29/08/2023 17:21

Hi all,

Well less then 24 hours to go until I am at the dental hospital in Birmingham for my sedation and extractions.

So many scenarios running through my head.

Will my high blood pressure mean the appointment is cancelled or will the sedation bring it down once I am relaxed?

What if the sedation doesn't work and I feel it all?

I am not looking forward to this at all.

You'll be ok!

I've had IV sedation three times for dental procedures as I have dentist anxiety and would be in full blown panic attack before I'd even opened my mouth without it.

First two I don't remember anything at all, just a lovely relaxed feeling coming over me, then I came to in recovery with no memory at all. Third time I remember bits, but it's completely hazy and I didn't feel any pain, just have vague memories of finding it very funny how the suction kept catching my tongue.

They'll be monitoring you and checking in to make sure it's working, they'll be able to tell if it's not.

Good luck, it'll be over before you know it!

I LOVE dental sedation, LOVE it and I promise you you won’t know or feel a thing :)

I am a really nervous patient and so have to be sedated for any and all dental
work and so long story short I reckon I’ve been under more that a dozen times in the past ten years ….. and I have never once known anything about what’s happening .

sometime what happens is you begin to become a bit more aware and then they give you a bit of a top up and then you’re off again, I’d liken it to stirring in your sleep and then rolling over and drifting off again. But this may just happen to me because I’ve been under so many time they have to give me enough sedation to take out a horse nowadays!

lastly I also have slightly high blood pressure but it’s always been fine

I hope this helps, honestly it’s amazing

I've not had sedation but I did have a molar extracted recently. I promise that you will be fine and you won't feel a thing. It will soon be over and the relief will be immense. Good luck.

Thank you all.

Just massive nerves and want it over with now.

This time tomorrow it will all be over with. I understand the anxiety, I was really frightened but it was over with so quickly and zero pain. Fingers crossed for you.

Just keep reading some people still feel the pain. It worries me.

Feel such a wimp.

Don't worry, they will make sure that you are numb. Please tell them your fears and they will put your mind at rest. I didn't feel a thing.

Markb1980 · 29/08/2023 20:24

I think the worry is actually worse then the procedure.

Butbit is the hardest thing to shake.

How many teeth are being extracted?

Do not cancel, you can do this. What time is your appointment?

That's only four hours to wait, you can do this. Try and busy yourself for the distraction. It will soon be over.

Just worried I am going to feel everything.

I can't get my head around it all.

All I remember when I had my wisdom teeth taken out under sedation was the nurse talking to me beforehand, and waking up afterwards.

Trulee · 30/08/2023 09:22

Tell the dentist that you are worried. They won't be extracting teeth unless you are properly numb. It will be ok, the relief you will feel once it's done will be huge. Also, you are getting sedation. That's really going to help you. Be brave.

FannyFifer · 30/08/2023 09:23

I've had the dental sedation a few times & tbh it was bloody great.
It made me talk a lot of crap though but was pretty funny.
You will be fine.

FannyFifer · 30/08/2023 09:25

You won't feel pain, they numb your mouth as well as the sedation.

I honestly was very relaxed & it was really quick.

Soontobe60 · 30/08/2023 09:35

OP, you really won’t feel anything. I promise! I’ve had dental sedations several times as I have a real fear of dentists, and had a traumatic injury that could only be managed with sedation. I have never felt a thing - believe me, if I had there would be no way on earth I’d ever go back!
I take 2 paracetamol an hour before the treatment (but I think this is just a psychological thing), sit in the chair, have an injection and drift off.
Apparently last time I had it, I was trying to sing through the treatment and my DH could hear me from outside the room!

Markb1980 · 30/08/2023 09:44

It's the needles I have the most phobia off.

Having to have numbing cream for the initial sedation. That's how bad I am.

Lots of people have fear of needles. Try looking at it another way. The tiny needle will make the procedure pain and worry free, will only take a few seconds.

Well here I go.

Just leaving now.
