Thank you firstly for reading. Apologies if it’s long, I’ll try to keep it as short as possible.

yesterday morning I woke up and thought my voice isn’t right, the left side of my face also felt strange as I’m wasn’t quite right. I looked at myself in the mirror after noticing my left foot seemed to take longer to hit the floor than my right and seemed it didn’t really know what it was supposed to do. So when I looked in the mirror I noticed the left side of my face wasn’t drooping but didn’t have same symmetry as the right. When I smiled it looked like I just come out the dentist after an injection on my left side. the foot thing did panic me as my body just wasn’t in sync at all.

I went to a&e as the first thing that did worry me was is it a stroke with my left side not working. When I arrived I went straight though to triage and was sent to resus. I was told it gave the same symptoms as a stroke. Whilst there my left leg didn’t have same strength as right and from what i gathered for a while my left eye wasn’t same as the opposite one. After being there a short time I then found it difficult to speak, I had to think about what I was saying and I started to find difficulty speaking and stuttering my words too.

I went for a CT head scan which came back okay.

I was then transferred into a room in A&E where I was being monitored until there was a room in the admissions ward to see the stroke specialists. Must also say at this point all the staff were so lovely. Rather hot doctor in resus but let’s not go there 😂

up to admissions ward and saw the stroke specialist/consultant who was also lovely, she said ct scan was fine but would be referred for an mri. As it’s the weekend would have to wait until next week but to stay in that night. She asked me symptoms from when I realised things weren’t right so I started from when I got out of bed that morning and my voice was odd until I got to that ward.

she said she didn’t think it was a stroke but mri would show either way. Mentioned that it could be a migraine as sometimes they show stroke symptoms without a headache.

stayed in overnight and saw consultant next morning, she said she’d be happy for me to go home and go to clinic outpatient next week for mri. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go home as obviously scared after what happened and especially as don’t know why it happened.
I thought about it for a few hours and decided to go home as she had no worries about this.

whilst in the ward I spoke to another patient who said they had a mini stroke or tia I think it’s called and he had same symptoms as me but little less.

also on discharge I noticed it wasn’t my consultant who wrote discharge letter but a trainee doctor who had seen me at initial
dosvussion with consultant day before but whom i didn’t speak to. On this letter it says very briefly that I was admitted with voice disturbance and mentioned when I smiled in Mirror. This all happened before I got to hospital. Nothing is mentioned from when o got there like the not being able to speak, the high blood pressure, the leg weakness, the mouth not being symmetrical, nothing at all.

also says I declined admission over the weekend for an mri due to childcare commitments which also isn’t the case, childcare wasn’t an issue and the reason I left was due to being told they couldn’t see any problems and to visit outpatient for scan. I at no point asked to go home.

sorry for long thread. Thanks for reading and any advice would be appreciated.

@WetBandits
thank you for your reply.
can I ask was one side of your face not dropping but not as symmetrical more around the mouth?
also did you find it difficult to speak and get words out and stutter?
did they tell you what caused it?
thanks

Yes, it was just my mouth rather than my whole face, I had a bit of an Elvis smirk 😅

And my speech was the first thing I noticed I think, my words were coming out in the wrong order with big pauses between words, or I’d just use the wrong word.

It was put down to stress, which I can totally understand and appreciate as I was incredibly stressed at the time, barely sleeping, working 70 hours a week.

FannyFifer · 28/08/2023 19:37

How are you doing today?

Fingerscrossed11 · 29/08/2023 21:09

@WetBandits
thank you for your reply.
hope you’ve had nothing similar since?
it’s bizarre how our bodies react.

@FannyFifer
thanks for your message.
im okay, thank you. Had my MRI today, the consultant said she would call on Thursday.
Im still a bit nervous to be honest on what caused it and if it happens again.
hope you’re well x

@Pollymollydolly
thank you for your reply
after doing some google research, apparently a CT scan wouldn’t show a stroke until hours afterwards, this has me worried as that’s what I had in the hospital. Had the MRI today so hoping when it comes to Thursday that it isn’t what they’re looking for.
also thanks for the advice on the follow up with the doctor, I appreciate that x

I've had 2 strokes where I was hospitalised and numerous mini strokes / TIA's that went unacknowledged at the time.

Unacknowledged tia's included intermittent numbness down right side.
Briefly couldn't understand spoken language
Briefly lost the power of speech

Hospitalised strokes 1st: Right side of brain so manifested full left side numbness. Had full ability to speak altho slightly distorted due to left sided facial weakness but did not lose ability to speak at all or think of words I was going to say.

Interestingly next hospitalised stroke was left side of brain: so along with right sided numbness also lost all ability to speak. Couldn't even move a facial muscle. Turns out this is because the speech centre is on the left side of the brain. We learn something new every day lol and why my speech wasn't affected during the last stroke.

If your numbness was on the left side and your speech went then I can understand why they think migraine. However, always best to err on the side of caution and get checked out fully. Being told you're being blue lighted for something life threatening is super scary so sending hugs Flowers

Ispywithmycynicaleye · 29/08/2023 23:20

P.s. feel free to ask anything about the numerous mini tia's that went undetected for years.
I have an appointment at the Life After Stroke department again on thursday this week (who said unlikely I'll have another stroke lol) so ill be asking plenty questions. If you think of any just let me know and I'll ask x

Fingerscrossed11 · 31/08/2023 22:52

@Ispywithmycynicaleye
thank you so much for your reply.
I’m so sorry to hear that you’ve had 2 strokes and mini strokes. I hope you’re keeping well now and it stays that way.
I actually heard the stroke nurse speak to the patient in the bed next to me in hospital that numbness and difficulty with movement in left side is caused by a stroke in the right side and vice versa.
You have given me so much helpful information, thank you dearly for that.
Ive never had migraines and rarely get headaches (touch wood)
it really was something I’ve never experienced before and don’t ever want to experience again.
its weird that my left side was affected and then maybe an hour after first symptoms that’s when my speech was affected by not being able to quickly say what I wanted to albeit I did get there eventually and then the stuttering my words. Just couldn’t think and speak as I would.
thank you for the hugs 💐
can I ask how long your tia/stroke were between each other.
thank you again for your advice, so helpful 🤗

@Ispywithmycynicaleye
i hope you got on well at your appointment today. I really do hope you never have another stroke or tia again.
did they say why they thought this?
sorry for just getting back to you and thank you so much for offering to ask questions.
when I left the hospital I was told o would get mri Tuesday which I did and I would get a call on Thursday so I’ve waited all day today on the call to make sure all’s okay.
i know they are all very busy but didn’t get a call today and now worrying they need someone else to look at results etc or something else. My mind is saying if everything is okay would take 2 mins to call and say it’s okay.
hopefully get a call tomorrow.
did you get what you wanted from your appointment today? I hope so 💐

Wow. I went through this in March. Hospital staff treated me as if I was making it up. It was super scary. I'm glad I'm not alone!

Update - had MRI on Tuesday and was scheduled a call from consultant today but didn’t get one.
i know they are so busy but just wondering if no news is good news or with my thinking - has the report to be read by someone else before the call

I had this happen to me last year. My vision went, weakness in right side and couldn't get words out everything was garbled. It was absolutely terrifying.

I went to A&E and had a CT scan which was normal. A couple of weeks later I had an MRI which was normal and they discharged me telling me it was a migraine.

I've been terrified to have another one since you have my sympathies. I'm 37. They think stress was a trigger.

CandyLeBonBon · 31/08/2023 23:11

Fingerscrossed11 · 31/08/2023 23:02

@CandyLeBonBon

No I was very much dismissed. Mri and ct clear but I'd been having numbness in my left arm/hand for a while before it happened. Dismissal as atypical migraine but not really any closer to understanding what happened

Dpace · 31/08/2023 23:11

If you haven't heard anything from the MRI I would definitely be reassured - anyone with no issues goes to the bottom of the pile. They would be able to see clearly from the scan if you had had a stroke or a TIA and they would have to get you in and on medication as soon as possible.

If it is a hemiplegic migraine it can be hormonal (are you in peri menopause) or caused by a number of things. Although terrifying they are not harmful and do resolve. I do understand how terrifying it is though. I hope you hear back from your scan soon.

Tilllly · 31/08/2023 23:19

I got the call about 9am

I think it's probably no news is good news, but ring them tomorrow if you've not heard by lunchtime

Fingerscrossed11 · 31/08/2023 23:21

@Dpace
thank you for your reply.
sorry to hear you had that.
I know stress can cause our bodies to react in different ways but for these symptoms to happen is terrifying and I feel there has to be some sort of explanation which puts peoples mind at ease who have experienced this.
must be the migraine of all migraines with these symptoms.
like you say it’s a constant worry it happens again.
have you experienced anything similar since on a lesser scale?
i hope you never have to experience it again.
im 41 so don’t think I’m peri menopausal yet 😂
hope to hear tomorrow but I’ll post an update when I do.
read about the hemiplegic migraine and to be diagnosed (if that’s what it is) you need to have had it twice

Fingerscrossed11 · 31/08/2023 23:23

@CandyLeBonBon
are you still having numbness?
hopefully it’s been a rare thing to happen and doesn’t happen again but there’s still that thought of what caused it. I think if uou know what’s caused it then you can relax a bit.

im actually a nervous wreck about getting this call so maybe a good thing I didn’t get a call today albeit been watching my phone all day.
when they called you did they say what they saw on scan and did they prescribe medication to stop it happening again?
I have 300mg aspirin to take each morning but have 2 days supply left

I'm scared to even type it but no I haven't had anything since and it was over a year ago. My anxiety afterwards (and even now when I think about it) was sky high.

Funnily enough I did get them when I was a teenager but for some reason I didn't care - I just slept them off. Now I'm a parent I have quite bad health anxiety as constantly worry I won't be able to look after my DC if I'm ill so it's caused me to go down a bit of a rabbit hole.

If you do end up with the doctors saying a migraine (google migraine with aura and transient aphasia) then there are things you can do to help to prevent another attack. After much research and speaking to my GP I now take the following daily:

Magnesium - lack of magnesium is a key cause
Complex Vitamin B
CoQ10
Feverfew (a herbal supplement but proven to reduce migraine attacks)

I also have some triptans which I carry in my bag which are prescription migraine medications.

DyslexicPoster · 31/08/2023 23:43

I had stroke like symptoms after my AZ vaccine. After a few hours in resus they thought it was bells palsy, until it went completely on day 3. I had five days in hospital and never got to the bottom.of it. I was discharged to neuro who thought it was a migraine. I do get horrific migraines ( not had one since touch wood). Could not rule out a tia or tiny clot. I suspect it was a clot as they was almost repeatedly shouting at me when did I have my covid vaccine, was it AZ in resus. It was like no migraine I have ever had. I can't belive it was just a migraine.

Been fine ever since. Well no more stroke symptoms or migraines. But it was only my face. Everything else was fine. I couldn't close my mouth and was dribbling. Scary times. If it was bells palsy I was loaded to the eyeballs with steroids. My BP was through the roof.

I hope you hear about the mri tomorrow

Maddy70 · 31/08/2023 23:50

I had exactly the same about 4 years ago. I still feel like it was as mini-stroke and my cognitive ability isn't the same but all my tests came back hematite so = migraine

Yes they did, told me an artery was furred up
The neurologist told me he'd write to my GP to arrange meds and to take one aspirin a day until I got the prescriptions through

You can buy aspirin over the counter whilst you wait for results / script

Hello
I have hemiplegic migraines quite regularly. They start off with an aura which is like the old snake game on the Nokia phones and that lasts for about 5-10 minutes. Then I get numbness down one side of my face from my nose and into my mouth and I start to slur my words.

Then the numbness goes down the same side and into my arm and hand. It's also a bit tingly.

Mine doesn't go down into my legs but it can. I am usually left with quite a mild headache but am more emotional and I can't use words properly. As a teacher this can be the hardest part as I am trying to tell a child to pick up the wooden thing from the floor because the word pencil has gone from my
memory.

The first time this happened I had a CT scan and a spine injection thing ( sorry menopause is doing the same thing with some words!)
I saw a consultant who said it is classic hemiplegic migraines and mine are chronic because I get them quite often. Sometimes they repeat and go from side to side and that is the worst because I then start to feel sick.

I wear a medic alert bracelet with the info on because the early symptoms can make me seem drunk.

Fingerscrossed11 · 01/09/2023 22:23

@Dpace
thank you for your advice. Having children and getting sick is definitely a worry. I feel your pain there as I feel exactly the same as you do.
Are those good supplements to take all the time and is there certain dose.
thanks. Also wishing you never to have another thing happening like that again x
