Sickness bug advice needed

MrJi · 25/08/2023 22:45

Dd 16 came down with a vomiting bug late on Monday night/early hours of Tuesday. Very nasty bug, constant sickness and diarrhoea, needed antiemetics. Things eased up slightly through Wednesday and she wasn’t vomiting but then was sick once late afternoon. Diarrhoea still slightly there. Yesterday she wasn’t sick at all, but feeling weak and nauseous, she hadn’t eaten much apart from a cracker and some apple purée but then perked up in the evening and had a small amount of pasta.
Today she has seemed less well . We spoke to the GP who thought probably just her system is inflamed and adjusting to food again. She has been nauseous today but eaten some crackers and fruit, drinking enough. Then tonight she ate some egg and potato and has just been sick again.
I have never known a D&V bug drag on like this, she is getting really stressed and upset as she was at camp when it started and is meant to be away. Nobody else at camp has it so far. Stool sample partial results back, not showing any of the main bacterial infections. She was in the sea 48 hours before getting sick and got water in her mouth. Rest of us (dd1, DH, me) all ok so far.
Any advice ? Anyone else have sickness bugs drag on like this ? It has always been 24 hours tops here.
Anything I can give her to help recovery ?

I will get that in the morning. Seven days and nights ! What on earth could it have been ? Norovirus is normally 48 hours at the most.
I am worrying as she has had various sickness bugs over the years, and food poisoning, but all brief, and the same for me.

No idea. I wondered if campylobacter or something but, as I couldn’t get through to the Drs after 3 days of trying, I gave up. It really was horrendous. I was still feeling so weak and run down the following week. I lost 11 lbs and even after a week of being able to eat again I had still only put 6 back on. I’m still not back to my usual weight and I don’t weigh much to begin with.
I hope your DD manages to shake it off soon, it was painful being so ill.

coloursquare · 25/08/2023 23:22

Norovirus not necessarily 48 hours. I've definitely had it for a week before.

MrJi · 25/08/2023 23:24

I did think maybe Campylobacter but the tests were negative for that.

If it is Noro I am surprised that none of the rest of us have come down with it as it is so contagious. They might test the sample for that I suppose, but the rest of the results probably won’t be back until Tuesday or so now.

It incubates, sadly. I speak from bitter experience!!

hungryalways23 · 25/08/2023 23:34

I had a nasty bug recently. The sickness stopped after about 12 hours but the diarrhoea went on for days and I had no appetite for a week or more. Bugs seem to be a lot more savage post covid. If the results for all the nasties have come back clear I guess you just have to ride it out,

MimiArm · 25/08/2023 23:34

My DH had exactly this 3 weeks ago and I'm sorry to say it lasted for over 2 weeks. He reports that his stomach still doesn't feel right but he's carrying on like normal as the D & V has stopped. He had terrible stomach cramps and couldn't hold down much at all for the 2 weeks and had zero energy.

Doctor reported that there is a nasty bug doing the rounds and that dairy products make it worse.

Hope she feels better soon.

Fifireee · 25/08/2023 23:48

Have you seen recently about how many people are getting sick from being in the sea or rivers?
Poor thing. Could she tolerate a yakult type drink?

picturethispatsy · 25/08/2023 23:50

We’ve had this with our DC a couple of times. Not all vomiting bugs last only 24 hours, that’s a myth.
From experience you need to introduce food very very slowly and carefully. Start with very simple starches, dry crackers, toast with jam only, plain pasta, mashed potato etc. I would avoid all fruit and definitely do not touch dairy until she’s fully better and even then re-introduce slowly and start with something simple like plain yogurt.
You’re lucky if this is the first time she’s experienced this age 16.
Focus on fluids and rehydration sachets and rest rest rest. The body will heal in its own time just don’t rush the process. Good luck.

AussieManque · 26/08/2023 00:01

Apparently quite a lot of people have these symptoms with latest covid variant. Could be that?

MrJi · 26/08/2023 00:23

She had been with someone who tested positive for Covid, but she has been testing every day for a week and is negative. No other Covid symptoms . I was really unwell for a long time last time I had Covid so I am stressing about that possibility, fingers crossed it isn’t that.
I did think it could have been from the sea as it was with hindsight she swam too close to a storm , which can make the sea much more polluted.
I gave her some strawberries yesterday as that was all she wanted most of the day apart from crackers and the NHS advice was to give fruit , tomorrow I will start again with very plain things, crackers etc. She wants Yakult, would those be ok?
I have had quite a few sickness bugs over the years , so have both children , none lasting longer than 24 hours although I have sometimes felt fragile for a couple of days afterwards. Seems we have been lucky ! I can’t imagine how tough it must be to have a bug like this last a week or longer, I thought she might end up in hospital on a drip on Tuesday .

Unfortunately the LFTs are no longer very reliable but hopefully if she did have it it would have eventually showed up.

Growing up biting my nails (fingers and toes!!) I frequently had diarrhea for prolonged periods, so it could be something she ingested. Can you get a stool sample tested?

picturethispatsy · 26/08/2023 09:05

Poor thing. Sounds like it hit her hard.
I personally wouldn’t give the yakult yet (learned this the hard way!). Dairy really does keep the tummy from healing and prolongs the diahorrea. I’d hold off until at least next week &/ or stools are firm again. Fruit may be ok as long as it’s not too acidic. So no citrus etc. A few bites of banana would be best. Just take it really really slowly.

MrJi · 26/08/2023 10:20

Still has been tested, diarrhoea stopped yesterday, but then she vomited up her supper. Maybe just too rich a meal too soon ? It was a small portion but egg , potatoes, onion (a small slice of frittata). I have always gone by “be guided by what you feel like eating” when unwell but should have kept to plain pasta perhaps.
She is missing essential rehearsals for an important performance and she is upset and stressed which isn’t helping either.
Rest of us still ok this morning.

OP posts:
MrJi · 26/08/2023 10:22

That should be stool tested not still !

OP posts:
picturethispatsy · 26/08/2023 10:29

Poor love. Yes too rich too soon I’d say.
With a bug like this you have to go SO slowly, even if they feel like eating something. After a couple of set-backs I got strict with my DC and made them eat the bland boring carb diet and only introduced new foods one at a time. The bug has probably gone but certain ones can damage the gut lining so bad it appears like it’s lingering around when in fact the gut is just still healing.

Also you may want to get her some probiotics when she’s feeling a bit better. I can recommend Biokult.

MrJi · 26/08/2023 14:02

I have given her a probiotic but will get some biocult too. She looks fragile, obviously she has lost weight, she is still pale and not her normal bouncy self.
She has only had cream crackers this morning, and some very dilute apple juice.
I suddenly remembered that Pepto Bismol was the thing that helped me after tummy bugs, but I can’t get it anywhere.

NanTheWiser · 26/08/2023 15:01

@MrJi Pepto Bismol is available on EBay, but quite expensive.

OnSecondThoughts · 26/08/2023 22:02

I've had this too - or something very like it. No V in my case, but I had about 9-10 days of off-and-on D, & mild nausea. Saw my GP, who took stool samples for C-Diff, calprots and culture - all came back negative. The D stopped 2 weeks ago but even now my stomach's not quite back to normal yet. Lots of intestinal gurgling and rumbling/squeaking still going on and still feel a bit bloated. It's kind of reassuring to hear that there is a bug going round with these symptoms, and that it lingers on a bit, otherwise I'd be wondering what was wrong.

anotherdaytoday76 · 26/08/2023 22:16

I had something similar for nearly three weeks when I was pregnant.

My amazing GP said to eat BRAT only for 2 days:
Bananas
Rice (plain boiled)
Apple sauce
Toast (dry)

It actually worked to my great relief.
