Thickening of the bowel

DFIL recently had a pelvic and abdominal CT scan after some pain and bowel habit changes (he won't tell us anything else). The CT scan apparently shows an area of thickening in his bowel. He's been referred to the colonoscopy clinic for an urgent appointment.
He's massively down playing it, and says his FIT test and bloods were normal last year so probably nothing.
DH is beside himself with worry and believes his father has bowel cancer.

Has anyone had a similar experience, that turned out to be something less sinister?

Thickening of the bowel could be anything - crohns, colitis, diverticulitis, infection, benign tumour or cancer. Do you now how thick it is? I’m so sorry you are going through this.

Thank you for replying.

No, he won't tell us anything. He's in his 70s, so presumably would already know if he had something like Crohns?

It's reassuring to know there are multiple possible causes, anyway. We're not Googling anything - that way madness lies!

I wasn’t diagnosed with crohns until well into my 40s. Though it’s predominantly diagnosed in young adulthood, I believe around 5% of cases are diagnosed in those over 60. Hopefully it’s something that’s been caught early and is straightforward to treat op. It’s good they are following him up quickly.

Interestingly with crohns it tends to either develop in your late teens/twenties or sixties/seventies. You aren’t born with it so it is possible he has crohns. I work on a colorectal surgery ward and see pensioners with newly diagnosed crohns fairly often.
