B/F baby with tummy bug refusing most milk and food....

My 9 1/2 month old baby started vomiting her milk on weds - most feeds came straight back up. Yesterday she took milk but no food and didn't vom. Today shes not taking much milk at all, no food, will drink water but I am worried. Don't like putting her to be without milk. Shes been sleeping through til 7am and I didn't wake to feed her as I thought she'd need the sleep but am really worried!

Any advice? I think its a tummy bug thats going around at the moment as both me and my partner got it today too.

I think the most important thing with D&V bugs is avoiding dehydration... as long as she's getting water, that's ok.

I would avoid solids, keep offering a BF, and water inbetween if she's not taking much breast milk.

Hope she's better soon!

(Give your out of hrs GP a ring if you want medical advice and reassurance though )

thank you - I went to gp when it started on weds and as soon as I sat down he said
'mum, the baby is fine, nice moist eyes and lips. is that what you are worried about?' she is ok - was bouncing around earlier, just I feel really weird having spent so many months feeding her and have never had her reject breast milk before in any way!

I think babies (and kids, actually) are really sensible when they are ill. They seem to know when to eat and when not to eat.

Am sure she'll be back on the bf when she's feeling a bit better. Just keep offering!

thats really sensible advice - thanks am feeling much better about it . Now I can go and start worrying about my own tummy

I've put this on other D&V/just vom threads - lot of them about!
DD (13mo) had vom but a month ago. Vomd everything for about 36 hrs then vomd sporadically thereafter for about a week. After first 36 hrs when she couldn't keep anything down, she was then able to keep breastmilk down only, so upped feeds. Gradually got better over next couple days until she was vomming once/twice a day, and after interesting chat with GP started to dose with calpol and keep eye on her temp, which was only slightly up (38?). GP said that it was temp spike causing vom. dosing with calpol every 6 hrs made a difference, and she was eating heartily within 48hrs.
GPs also say now not to withhold solids. Go figure.
Anyway hope you can get anything useful out of that.
Dehydration most important to guard against - as long as baby is urinating and it's not dark then probably ok - although number wet nappies will inevitably reduce. Sips of water or rehydration fluid good, but don't give anything within 30 mins of vom.
She will be more tired than usual.
Weird cause DH had it at same time, and I've only just had it a month later.
Agree with bernard.
Must be awful with you and DP ill as well. Feel for you - hope you're all much better soon x

Poor you!

Have had the everyone-in-the-house-crapping-and-vomming scenario a few times now...

It's AWFUL isn't it?!

Take care of all of you

mylovelymonster · 29/02/2008 21:26

Really nasty when you only have one loo.....

notnowbernard · 29/02/2008 21:31

And 1 bucket...

mylovelymonster · 29/02/2008 21:34

Oh poor bernard! Hope you're all well now, and can laugh about it jovially

notnowbernard · 29/02/2008 21:38

Oh Yes, how we laugh!

I honestly think there is nothing (at family-illness type level) worse than d&v
